Planche #51, Mother and Child Reading

1920

About the Item

Henri Matisse's Planche 51 from the 1920 portfolio Cinquante Dessins features a tender scene of two female figures: an older woman standing to the left and a young girl with long hair reading to the right. While Matisse did not explicitly identify his models in this particular drawing, art historians have noted that his wife, Amélie, and his daughter, Marguerite, were frequent subjects in his early portraiture. Given the familial intimacy portrayed, it's plausible that these figures represent members of Matisse's own family, perhaps capturing a quiet domestic moment between mother and daughter. The Cinquante Dessins portfolio was produced by Matisse himself to accompany his 1920 exhibition at the Bernheim-Jeune gallery in Paris. Comprising 50 lithographic reproductions of his drawings, the collection emphasizes the artist's return to the human figure, focusing on women in various states of repose and contemplation. The frontispiece of the portfolio is an etching of Matisse's daughter, Marguerite, further underscoring the personal nature of the works included. In Planche 51, the depiction of the older woman and the reading child reflects Matisse's interest in capturing everyday moments with emotional depth and simplicity. The drawing's gentle lines and serene composition exemplify his ability to convey profound intimacy through minimal means. Shipping and Handling: We ship worldwide.
