About the Item

L' ARBRE EXTATIQUE is an original hand drawn limited edition lithograph printed using hand lithography techniques on archival Somerset paper, 100% acid free, by the Dutch artist known as CORNEILLE(Guillaume van Beverloo) an abstract expressionist who co-founded the 20th Century experimental art movement CoBrA recognized for their spontaneous, rebellious style of painting that was heavily inspired by the art of children and the mentally ill. Corneille devises his colorful fantastic imagery with exotic plant forms, sensuous female bodies, animals and lively pattern design. L' ARBRE EXTATIQUE confronts the viewer with a bold exotic yellow female nude set against a deep black background. One cannot avoid being intrigued by this exotic woman - her striking blue eye and long blue hair, posing with hand on her hip as an exotic red bird closes in towards her; a light yellow sphere encasing a green leafed tree form above. Print size - 23.25 x 19.75 in. unframed, excellent condition, full bleed image, vivid colors, pencil signed by Corneille Edition size - 200, plus proofs Year published - 1981 Printed at J K Fine Art Editions Co. NYC About the artist Corneille - Guillaume Corneille was born in Liege, Belgium on July 3, 1922. Corneille studied drawing at the Amsterdam Rijksakademie, but as a painter he was entirely self-taught. After having attended courses at the School of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, he started his painting experience influenced by Surrealism. Corneille, also known as Corneille Guillaume Beverloo, was a painter and graphic artist who radicalized the conservative Dutch art world in the early 1950s. He is co-founder with Karel Appel, Eugene Brands and Anton Rosskens of the experimental "Reflex" movement and initiator and exponent of the avant-garde CoBrA artist group with Karel Appel, Constant Nieuwenuhuis, Asger Jorn and Marcel Dotremont In 1949 he undertook his first trip to North Africa, where he discovered the Arab and Berber world. He was notably influenced by African art, which he collected during his time traveling throughout the continent during the 1950s. His work was also affected by Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee and, most notably, Vincent Van Gogh's use of color and form. Corneille after developing his artistic path in an abstract sense towards an abstract landscape, during the 50s, returns to figuration and at the beginning of the 60s, impressed by the colors of the nature of southern Europe and North Africa, he shifted his interest towards expressionism. His approach is often described as imaginative and poetic, and is characterized by an eccentric use of color and his placing of familiar subjects, such as cats, birds, and women, in mythological or juvenile settings. “I am a painter of joy,” the artist declared at his 2007 exhibit at the Cobra Museum. His works are featured in collections at the Cobra Museum of Modern Art in the Netherlands, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He died in Auvers-sur-Oise on September 5, 2010.
