Giovanni Domenico Campiglia, 'Explorator', engraving, 1734, edition unknown, scarce. Signed 'Dom. Campiglia del.' in the matrix, lower left. A fine impression, on handmade antique, laid paper; the full sheet with wide margins (2 1/2 to 3 inches). Light scattered foxing in the margins, away from the image; a water stain in the bottom right sheet corner, otherwise in good condition. Engraving by Gabbugiani, after the original by Giovanni Domenico Campiglia. Plate size 14 1/2 x 9 1/16 inches; sheet size 19 1/2 x 14 3/4 inches. Archivally sleeved; unmatted.
From a book of engravings by Antonio Francesco Gori (1691-1757) presenting a collection of female and male classical statues of mythological and allegorical figures from the museums of Florence, Italy. Drawn by Giovanni Campiglia and etched after his designs by various artists. The collection includes Greek gods such as Apollo, Bacchus, and Venus, as well as Urania, the muse of astronomy, and Victoria, an allegorical figure representing the Roman personification of Victory.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Painter and printmaker Mastro-Valerio was educated at the Salvador Rosa Institute in Naples, Italy (1906-1912), and came to the United States in 1913. He settled in Chicago and after a brief period as a commercial artist, established a reputation as a portrait painter. Among his patrons were the industrialists Harvey S. Firestone and Anheuser Busch.
Mastro-Valerio was also the owner and editor of the progressive magazine 'La Tribuna Transatlantica'. He wrote and published articles supporting the cause of Italian immigrants. He helped form the Giordano Bruno...
