About the Item
The nude in this serigraph (unknown number of multiples) has both an air of sensuality and sacredness. In part, this is because the artist was influenced by Da Vinci's ideas of the human figure. He drew her form with exquisite attention, often using color after printing the piece. The paper used is a cotton and linen blend with a bronze tint for the drawing. There are pinholes in the corners where it has hung, but these would be covered when framed. It is signed by the artist; it is sold unframed.
Juan Maldonado produced more than 400 portraits on commission, and focused his work on portraiture. Influenced by the Renaissance masters, especially Leonardo Da Vinci, Maldonado was a pivotal part of the Nuyorican art movement in the 1970s. While he apprenticed in Europe, and studied at the University of Perugia, Italy, he developed his career in NYC where he mentored and taught young artists. Maldonado died in Puerto Rico in December 2016.
