2011

About the Item

This color lithograph printed in 2011, Magie noire (Black Magic), by the Surrealist artist, René Magritte, is number 16 in an edition of 275. Facsimile signed "Magritte" lower right, in pencil, and stamped "Succesion Magritte." Initialed in pencil, lower left, by Charley Herscovici, President of the Fondation Magritte and of the ADAGP. Stamped lower left, "ADAGP Paris 2011." The artwork is entirely made in France: from the production of the Arches paper to the traditional lithographic printing process, one drawing for each different color, one color per press run. The work is in excellent condition, with vibrant colors throughout. René-François-Ghislain Magritte was born November 21, 1898, in Lessines, Belgium. He was an important Surrealist artist who challenged the viewer's preconditioned perceptions of reality and is known for his word paintings that investigate the relationship between text and image. From 1916-1918, the artist studied at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. In 1922, he married Georgette Berger, also an art student, who became his model and muse. His first solo exhibition at the Galerie Le Centaure in Brussels in 1927 was received poorly by critics but helped launch his career as a Surrealist painter. He lived in Paris for three years to be closer to the Surrealists and became a leading member of the movement. In 1929 Magritte exhibited at Goemans Gallery in Paris with Salvador Dali, Jean (Hans) Arp, Giorgio de Chirico, Max Ernst, Joan Miro, Francis Picabia, Pablo Picasso, and Yves Tanguy. Magritte's Surrealism is characterized by an illusionistic dream-like quality. The artist produced a body of work that rendered the commonplace strange and the familiar disturbing and uncanny. His work posed questions about the nature of representation and reality. These qualities of his art influenced numerous contemporary artists, some of whom were represented in the 2006-07 exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, "Magritte and Contemporary Art: The Treachery of Images." Other recent exhibitions include: a show at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, 2016-17; three retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1965; and two exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1992 and 2013. The artist died on August 15, 1967 in Brussels. Magritte first painted the theme of "black magic" in 1934. Magie noire belongs to a group of paintings and prints the artist executed in the 1940s: an illusionistically rendered female nude in an unidentified landscape. The model for these works is Magritte's wife, Georgette Berger. The figure is an idealized female nude leaning on a block of stone. Framed by a stone wall with a window opening out to the landscape, the subject looks out onto water and a cloud-filled sky. Her gaze is downcast and her eyes appear to be closed. Like a piece of classical sculpture, she is an object to be looked at. The female nude was the subject of Surrealist preoccupation. In this example, Magritte has created a fantasy or dream world that centers on the transformation of the female body. Like many of the other Surrealists, Magritte places sexuality and desire at the center and depicts woman as closer to the unconscious. The nude female body is the passive object of the viewer's gaze. The construction of woman in Surrealism is often as the object of desire or the tool of destruction. She is muse and "other." What of the work's subject, black magic? Is it the figure's transformation? Her bottom half is depicted in flesh tones while her top half is blue, like the sea and sky. Is her transformation from earthly to celestial black magic, as some have argued?: "Those pretty colors serve an image-making as well as a decorative purpose: the top half of the nude is painted a gradated blue, near enough that of the sky behind; from the waist down the colour is a flesh tone. It is a process of metamorphosis. 'Black magic. It is an act of black magic to turn woman's flesh into sky.'" Or is the woman herself the practitioner or agent of black magic? With its undercurrent of eroticism, the image seduces the viewer. Magritte posited that eroticism itself might be a reason for a picture's existence. For the Surrealists, woman is closer to the unconscious, and thus closer to the realm of magical transformation. Using the woman's body as agent of black magic, the artist allows the viewer to inhabit a world of Surrealist otherness.
