About the Item

Ryan McGinness “Women: The Blacklight Paintings": Hand signed exhibition poster created by the artist for The Standard Hotel, 2010. Screen-print with black flocking and fluorescent ink on paper. 23 x 35 inches (58 x 89 cm). Hand-signed from a limited edition of 300 (in pencil on lower right & left). Very good condition with the exception of some minor signs of handling. Provenance: The Standard. Ryan McGinness (American b.1972) Known for explosively recontextualizing often familiar iconography, Ryan McGinness makes kaleidoscopic, sprawling compositions that weave between abstraction and contemporary visual culture. A single, densely packed canvas is likely to incorporate flora, fauna, chandeliers, and family crests, as well as imagery from bathroom and street signs, all layered with a whirlwind of tightly rendered abstract patterns and motifs. Growing up in Virginia Beach, McGinness was inspired by the design elements of skate and surf culture, and his work takes this aesthetic and builds on it in an opulent and quasi-Rococo manner. McGinness’s works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Saatchi Collection in London, the Taguchi Art Collection in Japan, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Keith Haring Painted Man: Original 1983 announcement card for Keith Haring’s well-documented exhibition, Keith Haring 'Into 84' at Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York, 1983. For this series Haring borrowed Jones' body — from head to toe — as the canvas to his work. A bodily canvas defined by much of the bold pictograms characteristic of Haring's artistic signature. Photos by Haring's long-time friend and collaborator Tseng Kwong Chi. Off-set printed, 1983. Dimensions: 6 x 4 inches. Some minor fading to the reverse; otherwise very good overall condition with strong colors. Literature: Keith Haring: Posters (Prestel pub.) Further About In 1983 Keith Haring teamed up with award-winning choreographer and dancer Bill T. Jones, founder of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. Keith and Bill met in London in 1983 at a time when the graffiti artist was opening a major show at the Robert Fraser Gallery, and together they produced a series of exceptional collaborations in both performance and drawing.
