A powerful, intimate etching/drypoint by Trevor Southey titled "Heartcry." Rendered with lively, expressive linework and rich plate burr, this male nude study captures a moment of inward intensity — the figure curled in on himself, muscle and shadow articulated with both tenderness and urgency. The artist’s cross-hatching and gestural marks create a vibrating field around the body, amplifying the emotional core suggested by the title. Printed on warm cream paper, the work retains strong contrast and a palpable sense of hand-made presence.
Trevor Southey was born in Rhodesia, Africa (now Zimbabwe) in 1940. His African heritage can be traced to European colonists who settled in Cape Town, South Africa in the 17th century. In 1965 he immigrated to the United States, retaining an abiding sense of his African and British origins.
Southey's formal training includes two years at the Brighton College of Art in Sussex, England. He taught art at Brigham Young University through 1977. In 2010 The Utah Museum of Fine Arts presented the first full retrospective exhibit following Southey's entire career.
