About the Item
This vintage exhibition poster features a David Hockney photographic collage. A young man with a mop of curls wearing brown leather loafers crouches over his camera, reloading its film. He sits on a weathered grey wood porch beside a box of cigarettes. On a pink background, bold white sans-serif font reads: "David Hockney, New Work with a Camera, Andre Emmerich Gallery May 7 - June 3 at 41 E 57th Street." This vintage poster was designed by the artist in our studio and comes directly from our Petersburg Press archive. It is not pre-owned.
Based on Gregory loading his camera, 1983, a photographic collage on paper in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. Hockney’s keen eye and uncanny ability to capture his subjects’ individuality is evident in this portrait of Gregory Evans. Hockney’s longtime friend, one-time manager, and former lover, Evans has served as a longtime model and inspiration to the artist for over 40 years.
Hockney has been an avid portraitist throughout his career, drawing and painting subjects ranging from his mother and Celia Birtwell, his muse over many decades, to art dealer Larry Gagosian and artist John Baldessari.
