A former officer in the Tsarist army, Jawlensky did not begin his artistic training until 1889 in St. Petersburg. He studied under Ilya Repin and, through him, met Marianne von Werefkin and Helene Nesnakomoff, who later became his wife. Jawlensky moved to Munich with both of them in 1896 to attend a private art school. Here he met Wassily Kandinsky. The artist made several trips to France and, through the mediation of Sergei Diaghilev, was able to exhibit ten paintings at the Salon d'Automne in 1905. Jawlensky met Henri Matisse for the first time. In the summer of 1908, he worked with Kandinsky, Marianne von Werefkin, and Gabriele Münter for the first time in Murnau. It was here that the idea of founding the “Neue Künstlervereinigung München” (New Artists' Association Munich) was born, which the four painters and other Munich artists joined in 1909. In December of the same year, the group's first exhibition took place in Munich. Two years later, the ‘Blue Rider’ is launched as a new grand idea for artistic collaboration. In 1913, Jawlensky takes part in Herwarth Walden's First German Autumn Salon in Berlin. When World War I breaks out in 1914, Jawlensky is expelled from Germany as a Russian citizen. He moved with his family and Marianne von Werefkin to St. Prex on Lake Geneva and lived in Switzerland until 1921, where he began his abstract heads in 1918. Jawlensky then settled permanently in Wiesbaden. A severe case of arthritis in 1929 resulted in several spa stays, which the artist had to undergo regularly. Jawlensky suffered from progressive paralysis and found it difficult to paint. In 1933, the National Socialists banned him from exhibiting his work. The following year, the painter began his series of small-format “Meditations.” In 1937, 72 of his works were confiscated as “degenerate.” Three years later, in 1941, Jawlensky died in Wiesbaden. His style was initially influenced by the Fauves, particularly Matisse. But then the painter found his own expressionist style, characterized by strong colors in simple drawings. In later years, quiet, internalized images of the mystically spiritualized human face became characteristic of Jawlensky.

Alexej Jawlensky
Alexei Jawlensky (1864–1941) was a Russian-born Expressionist painter known for his vivid use of color and bold, abstracted portraits. Born in Torzhok, Russia, he later moved to Germany, where he became associated with the Der Blaue Reiter group alongside Wassily Kandinsky and other modernist artists. His work evolved from Fauvist-inspired landscapes to increasingly abstract and spiritual portraiture, particularly his Meditations series. Due to illness, he suffered from arthritis in later years but continued to paint. Jawlensky became a German citizen in 1934 and spent his final years in Wiesbaden, where he passed away in 1941.
