About the Item
Original "Take Up the Sword of Justice," antique poster from 1915. Archival linen backed in good condition, ready to frame. The poster was printed for the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee (PRC) in 1915.
The woman in the image, Britannia, personifies Britain as a warrior, similar to Lady Liberty in the United States war posters. She floats above the water in her flowing robe, holding the ‘Sword of Justice’ raised in her hand. The sinking Lusitania is partially afloat in the distance. At the time, the Lusitania was one of the largest passenger lines in the world.
"Take Up the Sword of Justice" is historically linked to the aftermath of the German sinking of the Lusitania in 1915. The sinking cost the lives of 1200 civilians, causing a worldwide outrage against Germany.
The poster's figure represents Justice, often personified as a woman holding a sword. The imagery conveys a call to action for society to demand accountability and reform in the wake of the tragedy. The ship in the background symbolizes the Lusitania, serving as a reminder of the disaster and the need for change.
This is not just any poster; it's an Original Vintage Poster, a unique piece of history.
