About the Item

Les Deux Amies is an original hand drawn limited edition lithograph printed in 13 colors on archival Somerset paper 100% acid, free, by the Dutch artist known as CORNEILLE(Guillaume van Beverloo) an abstract expressionist who co-founded the 20th Century experimental art movement CoBrA recognized for their spontaneous, rebellious style of painting that was heavily inspired by the art of children and the mentally ill. Corneille devises his colorful fantastic imagery with exotic plant forms, sensuous female bodies, animals and lively pattern design. Les Deux Amies is a fantastical red outlined portrait of two people; one a frontally posed female depicted with a bright blue, wavy wedge hairdo and dark mauve face. Her colorful mask like facial features and bosoms are prominently visible through her bright yellow transparent top. A second figure stands in profile against the right edge of the picture; the person's pale periwinkle face looks straight ahead and has eyes that connect with the woman's. The colors in Les Deux Amies are irresistible to look at - lively black, red, blue, and green stripes line the left edge of the composition, red drawing outlines contrast against a light lime green background, dark mauve plum shoulder color and touches of berry plum cheeks, cool light shades of greens and blues all captivate the viewer's gaze. Print size - 25.5 x 19.75 inches unframed, full bleed image, fresh vivid colors, pencil signed by Guillaume Corneille Year published - 1980 Edition size - 250, plus proofs Printer - J K Fine Art Editions Co., NY Corneille – Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (3 July 1922 – 5 September 2010), better known under his pseudonym Corneille, was a Dutch artist. Corneille was born in Liege, Belgium, although his parents were Dutch and moved back to the Netherlands when he was 12. He studied art at the Academy of Art in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. He was one of the founders of the REFLEX movement in 1948 and in 1949 he was also one of the founders of the COBRA movement, which has had great influence on Scandinavian art. He was active within the group from the beginning, not only painting but also publishing poetry in the Cobra magazine. He was a cofounder of the Experimentele Groep in Holland (nl). The poetic Corneille was strongly influenced by Miró and Klee. After the group dissolved in 1951 he moved to Paris and began collecting African art. These artifacts became evident in his works, which began to take on a more imaginative style, like landscapes seen from a bird's eye view, exotic birds and stylised forms. His work is in the collection of the Centre Georges Pompidou. Until his death Corneille lived and worked in Paris, and made visits to Israel where he worked with the Jaffa Atelier. On 24 September 2003 an exhibition of his prints opened at the Ramat-Gan Museum of Art, Israel. He died at Auvers-sur-Oise, France. Artist bio - wikipedia
