About the Item

Original lithograph by Mexican artist Emilio Amero (1901-1976) created 1950. Titled: “Mujer Escuchando La Concha (Woman with Shell). Edition size is 15 of 125. Signed in pencil lower left. In excellent condition. Image size: 12 1/4"h x 9 3/4"w. Presents in a 4-ply museum mat measuring 20"h x 16"w. Born in the village of Ixtlahuaca, in the state of Mexico, Emilio Amero counts Spaniards and Otomi Indians among his ancestors. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Mexico City. In 1911 he began his studies in art at the Academy of San Carlos. He also studied drawing privately with Antonio Gomez, a family friend and well-known newspaper artist. At the academy in 1917, he became acquainted with Diaz de Leon, Rufino Tamayo, Ramon Alva de la Canal, Enrique Ugarte, and Leopoldo Mendez-all students there at the time. Later he joined the open air school in Coyoacan, founded and directed by Alfredo Ramos Martinez. He and Jean Charlot, with whom he later worked closely in graphic arts, first met in 1921 in the library of the Academy of San Carlos at an exhibition which included some of Amero's work. The two became better acquainted when, together with Mewrida, Guerrero, and Rivera, they worked on the Preparatory School and Ministry of Education murals. The year 1923 found Amero and Charlot at work on the same lithographic stone, intent on reviving the long neglected art of printmaking. Amero is generally acknowledged as chiefly responsible for the renaissance of graphic arts, especially lithography, which paralleled the mural renaissance in Mexico. Amero went to New York in 1924 and worked for several magazines and newspapers, among them the Herald Tribune, the Times, the World-Telegram, the Brooklyn Eagle, The New Yorker, Theatre Magazine and the Boston Transcript. At the beginning of the 'thirties Amero returned to Mexico and taught at San Carlos, now known as the Central School of Plastic Arts of the University of Mexico. In 1940 Amero came to Seattle, Washington to teach at the University of Washington....... He later became art director of the Cornish school and afterward directed his own New School of Art. In 1946 he became a member of the art faculty of the University of Oklahoma. Amero had at least ten major one-man shows, in New York, Havana, Mexico City, Seattle and in Norman, Oklahoma. He also participated in many important group shows and won many awards.

This beautiful original etching and aquatint is by the noted Czech artist Vojtech Preissig. The work depicts one of the beautiful female portraits from his Orchid series in the Art Nouveau style. In 1897 he moved to Paris and worked for two years with the Czech Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha. Antique Rooster Portrait Prosper Alphonse Isaac (France, 1858-1924) Woodblock Print circa 1910 9 x 7 1/8 (15 1/4 x 17 frame) inches The excellent book "The Great Wave: The Influence of Japanese Woodcuts on French Prints" which was an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1974, recounts the phenomenal "cult of Japan" in late nineteenth-century France and reveals through direct comparisons its particular impact on the graphic work of Manet, Degas, Cassatt, Bonnard, Vuillard, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Gauguin. This print directly relates to the discovery of Japanese art most notably through the woodblock prints which found their way to the West oftentimes as stuffing or packing materials from consumer goods that were being imported to the West at the end of the 19th century. Prosper-Alphonse Isaac was born in a well-to-do family. This gave him the means not only of leaving his native Calais to pursue a career as an artist in Paris, but also the means to acquire art. Isaac was particularly drawn to Japanese arts, which he collected avidly. Many of the objects he bought were eventually given to museums. As a printmaker Isaac started drawing seascapes in dry point, but eventually moved on to become one of only a handful of artists versed in color woodcut techniques in France. His compositions, generally small in scale, are heavily influenced by the arts of Japan. He printed small editions of these works.
