Espoir Vyizigiro Kennedy was born on the 15th of November 1976 in Bujumbura, Burundi. He studied at Complexe Scolaire Congolese (Burundi) graduating in 2001 with a diploma in biology and chemistry. In 1996, he began to paint hair salon posters and shop signs for local business people, as well as landscapes for the tourist market in Burundi. When war broke out his family fled the Burundi genocide and now lives in the Congo.
In 2002 the artist moves to South Africa and settled in Durban, where he paints haircut banners and signs for South African salons. Kennedy customizes each of his banners according to who his clients want to feature on their salons. When one walks along the streets of Durban, one sees how a single immigrant can enhance and contribute to the identity of his adopted country in a very short while.
His "commands" come from all over South Africa and his work can be seen on pavements from Johannesburg and Carolina to Umtata and Estcourt.
Espoir Kennedy paints "because it is inside me, it is my life, a God-given talent"
Popular culture and iconography inspire him. Television personalities, movie stars, soccer players, musicians, and politicians, as well as the simply stylish, are his preferred subjects.

This powerful limited edition lithograph by William Steen was published in 1988 as part of the Art Against Aids portfolio, numbered 38/50.
Superb provenance as it is was acquired from the original Art Against AIDS Portfolio published in Houston, Texas. This will be the first time the work will be removed from the portfolio. The late 1980s was the height of the AIDS epidemic, and this was one of many efforts by the creative community to raise funds to assist in fighting this deadly scourge that disproportionately affected the artistic community.
William Steen 1949-2008
William Steen, artist, collector, curator, and mystic, died of pancreatic cancer on December 20 in New York, where he has lived since 2001. Long time framer at the Menil Collection, the soft-spoken Steen is remembered in Houston where he had his first exhibition of paintings in 1978 at the Roberto Molina Gallery. In 1984 Steen made his first of several trips to India, photographing thousands of Tibetan Buddhist ritual paintings. A champion of outsider art, in 2000 he tangled with the Houston Police over the grafitti mural he comissioned for the walls of the reclaimed Sterling Cleaners...
