About the Item

Polish printmaker Ewa Kutylak is known for her deeply symbolic and technically refined works that explore myth, the human form, and metaphysical transformation. In her striking triptych Orpheus, she reimagines the ancient Greek myth through a contemporary visual language that merges anatomical precision with poetic abstraction. The central panel presents a stylized portrait of Orpheus, his elongated head partly dissolved into a textured void, his hands raised in a gesture that suggests invocation or supplication. Fragmented text drifts across his visage like forgotten incantations or remnants of lost songs. The flanking panels depict androgynous, muscular figures in dynamic poses, each tethered to abstract string-like elements—evoking both the lyre, Orpheus’s instrument, and the fragile tension of his fate. Kutylak’s use of linear incision and delicate tonal modulation creates a sense of otherworldly detachment, as though these figures exist in a liminal state between body and spirit, sound and silence. Kutylak, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, has developed a distinctive voice within contemporary printmaking. Her work is often informed by mythology, literature, and a personal visual symbolism that bridges the cerebral and the sensual. In Orpheus, she channels the pathos of the myth not through narrative illustration, but through form and gesture—translating the essence of longing, beauty, and loss into a haunting visual poem. "The central theme of my works is man and his inner world. I use numerous religious, mythological and historical symbols (Noah, Jonas, Jacob, Sisyphus, Orpheus). Works are dreamlike, oneiric and have a disturbing and unrealistic climate. Permanent symbols such as dogs, dragons and fantastic creatures often appear. The idea of a tower is important for me and it often returns. This is a symbol of the soul, which renders the mysteries of the immaterial world.
