This framed hand colored stipple engraving and etching portrait of William Warham, Archbishop of Canterbury under King Henry VII and his son King Henry VIII was created by Francesco Bartolozzi (1728–1815) after a drawing and a painting by Hans Holbein (1497-1543), who was Henry VIII's court painter. The print was published in London by John Chamberlaine in 1795. The print was created utilizing stipple engraving and etching techniques by the Italian artist Francesco Bartolozzi, who was employed as the royal engraver by King George III of England. The publisher, John Chamberlaine, was Keeper of the King's Drawings and Medals. The inscription beneath the portrait reads" "In His Majesty's Collection", "Engraved by F. Bartolozzi R A Historical Engraver to His Majesty'' in the lower right, and ''From an original drawing by Hans Holbien'' in the lower left. The original painting by Holbein is displayed at Lambeth Castle and the original drawing is in the art collection at Windsor Castle. The engraving is held by many museums, including: The British Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Portrait Gallery, The Chicago Art Institute and The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
This portrait depicts Archbishop William Warham facing to his right, wearing a black cap covering his ears and fur trimmed clerical robes. The print is presented in a decorative gold-colored wood frame with a blue-grey fabric mat. The frame measures 26.5" x 20.13" x 1". The print is in excellent condition.
William Warham (1450-1532) was the last of the pre-Reformation archbishops of Canterbury, serving under King Henry VII and then under King Henry VIII. He was a quiet, unassuming intellectual whose career ended with a strong and brave stance against the divorce of King Henry VIII and the king's resultant withdrawal of England from the Catholic church and his draconian actions against the clergy. Joseph Beuys, who is recognized as one of the most influential artists of the postwar period, had a grand and ambitious goal for his work: the transformation of Western culture into a more peaceful, democratic, and creative milieu. His multifaceted career, which included sculpture, performance, lectures, activism, and even a campaign for elected office, were all part of an “expanded concept of art” that was aimed at advancing his utopian vision. In all its forms, his work is dense and highly allusive and draws on much of the accumulated knowledge of Western civilization, including history, religion, natural sciences, economic theory, and myth. A charismatic teacher, Beuys was mentor to a generation of younger artists who were inspired by his passionate fusion of art, life, and activism.
Service in World War II
Beuys was born in Krefeld, Germany, and as a youth pursued dual interests in art and the natural sciences. In 1940, at age 19, he joined the German air force. During his 5 years of service, he was wounded several times and interned in a British prisoner-of-war camp. He returned home in 1945 physically and emotionally depleted, and spent nearly a decade recuperating on a friend’s farm, where he made hundreds of drawings and small sculptures. Coming to terms with his involvement in World War II would be a lifelong process that informed much of his art.
Teaching at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Sled
After the war, Beuys decided to dedicate himself to art. In 1961, he was appointed to a professorship at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and soon became the school’s most sought-after teacher. At the same time, he began to develop his sculptural practice. One of his best-known works from this period is Sled (1969), which he called a “survival kit”: an elemental means of transport carrying a felt blanket...

This rare original lithograph print is from 1899. It is one sheet of a huge 24 sheet poster that was created in 1899 to announce Buffalo Bills Wild West. The size of the complete 24 sheet poster would have been approx. 10 feet tall by 20 feet wide and would have been posted on barns and buildings in 1899 to promote Buffalo Bills Wild West before it would come to towns. This 1 sheet of the 24 sheet lithograph is in such good condition because it was found in the Lithographers draws of the print shop that created the poster. It is black and white because it was a proof that was used to create the final layout of the color poster. It indicates on the image that it is No. 2 Buffalo Bill San Juan Hill 1899, so it would have been the 2nd poster down on the left side of the large total image comprised of 24 separate sheets all unique to create the full image. You can see the two black printed lines on the left side indicate where the edge of the poster would have been. We have never seen a complete image of this rare 1899 poster. Matisse's striking linocut shows Alexina "Teeny" Duchamp, the second wife of artist and pioneer of the ready-made, Marcel Duchamp. She was married to Pierre Matisse, Henri Matisse's eldest son, first and they had three children, Jacqueline, Paul and Peter. They separated in 1949 but Matisse was incredibly fond of his daughter-in-law until his death in 1954.
Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954) is primarily known as the founder of the Fauvist movement, a result of Impressionism, whose works fundamentally altered the course of Modern Art in the late 20th Century. Innovative in his original treatment of the human figure and an expressive use of color, Matisse forged his own pictorial language. Matisse's career can be divided into several stylistic periods, but he remained focused on discovering “the essential character of things” through his art.
Matisse considered his drawing to be a very intimate means of expression. The method of artistic execution — whether it was charcoal, pencil, crayon, etcher’s burin, lithographic tusche or paper cut — varied according to the subject and personal circumstance. His favorite subjects were evocative or erotic — the female form, the nude figure or a beautiful head of a favorite model.

Heathen (stylised as uǝɥʇɐǝɥ) is the 23rd studio album by English musician David Bowie. It was originally released in Europe on 10 June 2002, and the following day in America. After departing EMI/Virgin, it was his first release through his newly-formed ISO Records label, in conjunction with Columbia Records. It reunited Bowie with producer Tony Visconti, marking the two's first full-album collaboration since 1980's Scary Monsters. Recording mostly took place at New York studios from August 2001 to January 2002 and featured overdubs from several guest musicians, including Dave Grohl and Pete Townshend. Two tracks, including "Afraid" and "Slip Away" evolved from Bowie's shelved Toy album, while three were covers by Pixies, Neil Young and the Legendary Stardust Cowboy.
