This portrait of King George the III's son was published in the same year that Beethoven's Ninth Symphony premiered in London.
'The Protestants Champion!!' (Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, Son of King George III). London: George Humphrey, 1825. Etching and engraving with hand coloring in watercolor on cream wove paper, 10 x 7 3/4 inches (252 x 195 mm), trimmed to the platemark. Siginificant condition issues include multiple repaired tears in the lower center sheet area, thick adhesive residue throughout on the verso, and a corner tear that extends approximately 1.5 inches into the image area in the lower right. There is also an irregular trapezoidal area of bright discoloration with associated small surface losses at the top left sheet corner. Despite the condition issues, the pigments are fresh and bright.

George Cruikshank
George Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator praised as the modern Hogarth during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. Cruikshank was born in London. His father, Isaac Cruikshank, was one of the leading caricaturists of the late 1790s, and Cruikshank started his career as his father's apprentice and assistant. His older brother, Isaac Robert, also followed in the family business as a caricaturist and illustrator. Cruikshank's early work was a caricature, but in 1823, at the age of 31, he started to focus on book illustration. He illustrated the first, 1823 English translation (by Edgar Taylor and David Jardine) of Grimms' Fairy Tales, published in two volumes as German Popular Stories. On 16th October 1827, he married Mary Ann Walker (1807–49). Two years after her death, on 7th March 1851, he married Eliza Widdison. The two lived at 263 Hampstead Road, North London. Upon his death, it was discovered that Cruikshank had fathered 11 illegitimate children with a mistress named Adelaide Attree, his former servant, who lived close to where he lived with his wife. Adelaide was ostensibly married and had taken the married surname Archibold.

Rubbing in the lower left image area obscuring the publishing information (which reads Published by Mm. Darchery, St. James Street March 11, 1783), scattered light foxing, corner loss, top left corner, well outside of image area. "SMP" collector's stamp in red ink on the verso (not in Lugt), and the name "Renier" and the initials "AR" in black ink on the verso. Colors are extremely fresh. Impressions of this work may be found in the permanent collection of the British Museum, and the Yale Center for British Art.
