In order to gain awareness of something that is concealed yet right in front of your eyes, or hidden in plain sight, you must distance yourself. The Dutch multidisciplinary artist, Ger Doornink, specialises in painting, illustration and photography. Time spent living in Tokyo, Milan and currently Amsterdam, has heavily influenced his aesthetic. Strong lines and bright colours depict portraits of women. Doornink’s eye for design and close links to the world of fashion is evident, along with his fascination with the Italian and Dutch masters. Throughout his long and varied international career in design, photography, fashion and the arts, knowledge of diverse techniques has been garnered, coming together on his canvases to portray beauty itself.
Ger Doornink's series "Ode to Vermeer" is fully dedicated to explore the different possibilities of interpreting and representing the famous "Girl with Pearl Earring". Once again, his fascination for the Old Dutch Masters is evident, not only in his technique, but also in the theme chosen. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (Dutch national museum) is currently host to the biggest collection of Vermeer's work. The painting "Girl with Pearl Earring" was initially part of the exhibition, what encouraged artists to make their own interpretations of the masterpiece. Doornink takes this opportunity and makes the most out of it, showing again his talent and constant search for development and improvement and of his technique.
