About the Item
Militarisimus is one of sixteen color mezzotints from James Groleau’s acclaimed suite Flowers of Turbulence, a series composed of eight portraits and eight floral studies. Each portrait was inspired by nineteenth-century daguerreotypes and reimagined as a symbolic product of a turbulent society—traits such as greed, compassion, obedience, or, in this case, the psychological imprint of militarism.
The title of the suite, Flowers of Turbulence, intentionally echoes the structure of Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal (“Flowers of Evil,” 1857). Baudelaire used “flowers” metaphorically as the aesthetic blossoms of a corrupt or disordered society, and Groleau’s project parallels that concept almost point for point:
• portraits representing psychological distortions
• flowers paired with human traits
• the coexistence of beauty and darkness
• a meditation on moral decay through symbolic imagery
With its somber palette, emblematic staff, and direct stare, Militarisimus stands as one of the suite’s most powerful allegorical portraits—a timeless figure shaped by conflict, authority, and the forces that define a destabilized society.

James Groleau
James Groleau, whether the earth-toned studies of death and personal introspection or the brightly colored floral and portrait series, reflect an interest in order in the universe and man’s place within it. Groleau studied at the Massachusetts College of Art and at the City College Printmaking Program in San Francisco. He exhibits both nationally and abroad and has received numerous awards. He is a member of the California Society of Printmakers and a board member of the Graphic Arts Workshop in San Francisco.
