About the Item

John Colborne, 1st Baron Seaton Mezzotint by James Scott (1809-1889) after GW Fisher (1817-1895) . 1864. Proof, before letters. Blindstamp of Printsellers' Association lower left of image. John Colborne entered the Army in 1794. He first saw active service in the Dutch Helder campaign of 1799 and took part in an expedition to Egypt two years later. Colborne served in the Peninsular War (1808-14) and took part in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. After the war, he was promoted to colonel and became aide-de-camp to the Prince Regent. Colborne went on to serve in a number of high-ranking posts. He was Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey (1825) and Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada from 1828 until 1836. After he left Canada Colborne went on to serve as Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands (1843-9) and commanded the forces in Ireland (1855-60).
