About the Item

GEECH is a hand drawn, limited edition lithograph(not a digital print or photo reproduction) by JONATHAN GREEN printed using hand lithography techniques on archival Arches paper, 100% acid free. GEECH depicts a rural Gullah Lowcountry landscape scene featuring a black male figure standing in a golden brown field of waving grass wearing blue denim overalls, bright green shirt, black boots and straw hat carrying a tree branch on his shoulder. A bright red and purple checkered quilt hangs on a clothesline fluttering in the breeze with cottony white clouds dotting the blue sky and a few chickens pecking about on the lower left. GEECH is a colorful portrait of a hardworking man reflecting the life and culture of the Gullah community in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. The Gullah Geechee people have traditionally resided in the coastal areas and the sea islands of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida from Pender County, North Carolina, to St. Johns County, Florida. The image was hand drawn onto lithographic plates, proofed and printed on Rives BFK White paper, 280 gsm., 100% acid free. Year published - 2009 Edtion size - 100, plus proofs Print size - 27.5 x 34.5 inches, unframed, mint condition, pencil signed by Jonathan Green, Certificate of Authenticity provided Image size - 22 x 29.5 inches Painter and printmaker Jonathan Green is considered one of the most important contemporary painters of the Southern experience. The artwork of Green is heavily influenced by his Gullah heritage with vividly colored paintings and prints documenting everyday chores, in addition to celebrating Gullah life’s rites of passage. By returning his art to his childhood upbringing, Green has created an autobiographical body of work in addition to documenting a vanishing way of life. Jonathan Green's artwork has been exhibited across the United States and internationally, and is included in the permanent collections of several major museums. Artist statement - "I am drawn to rural environments that afford a sense of space and silence and an opportunity to unobtrusively observe daily functions of others as we all pursue life's mission of work, love and belonging.… It is the small, but critical tasks of daily life that I find most stimulating and reflective of the quality of essential, personal, community, and social values."
