About the Item
A wonderful portrait of a Bostonian dated 1858, by Leopold Grozelier, the artist best known for creating the first electoral poster ever, bearing the portrait of Abraham Lincoln (1860)
Léopold Grozelier was born in Beaune in France in 1830 as the son of a tanner. He studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Paris for a year before moving with his family to the US in 1848. He settled in Boston, married American artist sarag Peters, and became a lithographer. Despite the brevity of his carrer - he died at the age of 35 - much of his extraordinary work is conserved in the country's principal museums, libraries and public collections, such is in the British Library, the Art Institute of Chicago, the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, the Gilcrease Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Met Museum, the Lincoln Collection, the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Boston Atheneum.
Measured without the frame, the lithograph measures, at sight under the mount, 13 x 10.5 inches.
