STREET SCENE is an original hand drawn lithograph by the NY painter, Lester Johnson. Printed using hand lithography techniques on archival ARCHES paper 100% acid free. In STREET SCENE depicts a group of mannequin-like men and women walking as they look upward and sideways - not at each other, drawn in an expressive watercolor style, posed crowded together in their multicolor print dresses and brown suits, derby hats. STREET SCENE catches a glimpse of a busy city sidewalk featuring a male figure smoking a cigarette, women wearing red lipstick directing their dream-like gazes toward the sky, with hands, arm, and legs in motion. STREET SCENE is a figurative expressionist composition printed in predominately muted light oranges, coral, touches of red yellow, green, blue, warm browns, black. Print size - 28 x 21 in., unframed, excellent condition, hand signed in pencil by Lester Johnson Image size - 24.5 x 18 in. Edition size - 175, plus proofs Year - 1980 Printer - JK Fine Art Editions Co., NY As a figurative expressionist and member of the Second Generation of the New York School, painter Lester Johnson remained dedicated to the human figure as means of expression through the many stylistic changes of his oeuvre. Johnson exhibited his art at the Martha Jackson Gallery, Zabriskie Gallery, Gimpel & Weitzenhoffer, and James Goodman Gallery in New York as well as having been included in group shows at the Guggenheim, The Whitney, Museum of Modern Art, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was elected a member to both the American Academy of Arts & Letters and the National Academy of Design. Johnson lived and worked in New York City (on the Bowery), Springs, Milford (CT), Greenwich (CT), and Southampton, NY.

This 1980s Robert Kushner print was created as part of the 1987 portfolio "The Ten Commandments", in which ten top Jewish American artists were each invited to choose an Old Testament commandment to interpret in contemporary lithographic form. The "Chosen" artists were, in order of Commandment: Kenny Scharf, Joseph Nechvatal, Gretchen Bender, April Gornik, Robert Kushner, Nancy Spero, Vito Acconci, Jane Dickson, Judy Rifka and Richard Bosman. This is the first time the print will have been removed from the original portfolio case. (shown). Lisa Liebmann, who wrote the introduction to the collection, observed: "...The image has, for most of us, replaced the word..." With respect to the present work, she writes, "There is a sweet smell of nostalgia to Robert Kushner's view of the FIFTH COMMANDMENT, to honor one's parents. Kushner's subtly ornate use of colors suffuses his subject with a filagreed texture of warmth. In this gentle icon, the traditional duo - all those Ozzies and Harriets in our hearts and on the airwaves -are frames as if by a bubble bath of affection."
