About the Item
Signed and numbered. Flores Para Juarez pays homage to the women in Juarez, Mexico. The female figure in the image is a friend of Magallanes who had witnessed a lot of abuse growing up in Juarez, and emerged from her experience a very strong woman. Magallanes’ piece is part of an ongoing series of portraits of personal heroes and martyrs that also serves as a mapping of the artist’s own psyche through his cultural, historical and political influences.
Oscar Magallanes was born in 1976 in Duarte, CA. He recalls, “The first art I saw were murals of Zapata and Mexica glyphs from the Chicano movement. These were juxtaposed next to homeboy role calls and Old English writing. I didn’t see a gallery or museum until I was 15.” After a troubled youth and his expulsion from high school at the age of fifteen, Oscar was accepted into the Ryman Arts program which he credits with encouraging him to pursue a career in art.
From 1998 to 2003 Oscar’s studio was located in the thriving Pomona Artist Colony. Oscar also worked closely with the late Gilbert “Magu” Lujan. In 2010, Oscar was instrumental in Self Help Graphics participation in the international print fair, Philagraphica. He also curated a Self Help Graphics and Art exhibition at Sol Collective in Sacramento, CA.

Signed, numbered and titled in pencil, from the edition of 30. Sueño Despierta (“Awake Dream”) is a visual meditation on identity, resilience, and cultural memory. Blending symbolic imagery with portraiture, the piece features a central figure whose eyes are open in a state of alert dreaming. Surrounding elements such as plants, spiritual motifs, and historical references evoke a deep connection to ancestral roots and collective struggle. Fuentes' intricate line work and layered textures create a dreamlike yet grounded atmosphere, emphasizing awakening not as an escape, but as a call to consciousness.
The turbulent times of the 70’s set the tone for Fuentes' approach to creating social art...
