About the Item

Signed and numbered from the edition of 49. Oscar Magallanes’ tribute to the iconic Hip Hop figure Tupac Shakur. This is one in an ongoing series of portraits of personal heroes and martyrs that also serves as a mapping of the artist’s own psyche through his cultural, historical and political influences. Titled “Heuristic” the portraits also serve as an exploration of the makeup of popular culture and people’s movements by contrasting present and past paradigms. The piece’s precise hard edge lines and flat colors are emblematic of the artist’s trademark style. The graphic nature of the work further adds to the depth and thoughtfulness of the subject matter.

Flores Para Jaurez
By Oscar Magallanes
Located in Palm Springs, CA
Signed and numbered. Flores Para Juarez pays homage to the women in Juarez, Mexico. The female figure in the image is a friend of Magallanes who had witnessed a lot of abuse growing up in Juarez, and emerged from her experience a very strong woman. Magallanes’ piece is part of an ongoing series of portraits of personal heroes and martyrs that also serves as a mapping of the artist’s own psyche through his cultural, historical and political influences. Oscar Magallanes was born in 1976 in Duarte, CA. He recalls, “The first art I saw were murals of Zapata and Mexica glyphs from the Chicano movement. These were juxtaposed next to homeboy role calls and Old English writing. I didn’t see a gallery or museum until I was 15.” After a troubled youth and his expulsion from high school at the age of fifteen, Oscar was accepted into the Ryman Arts program which he credits with encouraging him to pursue a career in art. From 1998 to 2003 Oscar’s studio was located in the thriving Pomona Artist Colony. Oscar also worked closely with the late Gilbert “Magu” Lujan...

Achealy's Heel
By Wayne Healy
Located in Palm Springs, CA
Self-portrait of Los Angeles Chicano artist Wayne Healy, at work on the press at Self Help Graphics. Wayne Healy (born 1946) grew up in East Los Angeles, where political events in the 1960s stimulated his commitment to execute socially and culturally relevant public art. In the third grade, he collaborated on a dinosaur mural with David Botello. In 1975, the two ran into each other after many years, and Healy and Botello co-founded what became the mural team known as East Los Streetscapers. In 1992 Healy and artist Roberto Delgado were awarded a grant by the Joint Spanish/U.S. Committee for Educational and Cultural Cooperation to paint murals in Barcelona, Spain. They have created murals and public art works throughout the United States, Europe and Mexico with traveling exhibitions including "Le Demon des Anges", "2001: Hispanic Artists...

Golden Frida
By Miguel Angel Reyes
Located in Palm Springs, CA
Screenprint of Frida Kahlo by gay Chicano artist Miguel Angel Reyes. Signed, titled and numbered edition of 14. The sheet has nicely deckled edges (see second photograph). Miguel was born in 1964 in Colima, Mexico. One of Reyes's most vivid childhood memories is that of laying awake at night and listening to the sounds of people scurrying across his front porch as they hid in shadows and edged toward the fence, la linea, separating the U.S. from Mexico. Inevitably, Reyes's family made the trip themselves, deciding to stay in Los Angeles following one of their many “vacations (which meant going to Fresno to pick grapes for the summer). Besides Chicano cultural themes, his work also often includes homoerotic imagery. He was drawn to art early in his life, and graduated from Oits Parsons School of Design in 1987 with a BFA in fine art. After a short sojourn into the fashion industry following graduation, Reyes pursued painting, and today makes his living doing portraits, teaching, illustrating books and taking on occasional public art project commissions. Reyes' work incorporates expressionist brushwork and the saturated palette of the classic latin tradition. His work often incorporates homoerotic as well as Chicano themes. His art has been exhibited throughout the United States, and has been published many magazines. Miguel has created murals for the Los Angeles MTA, and his work is in the collections of LACMA print collections, Laguna Art Museum, Watts Towers...

Located in Draper, UT
I am very happy to reveal my poster to raise awareness for the Equal Rights Amendment. This issue means so much to me. Equality is the central issue of our day. “Equality is the flower of democracy. Passing the Equal Rights Amendment — at long last — will be the path to gender equality for our American democracy. I am grateful to be called upon to include my voice in the collective call to bring about gender equality by amending the Constitution with passage of the ERA, and I was quick to reach out to fellow artists to join the call to action.” — Chuck Sperry, artist statement for Artists 4 ERA VoteEqualityUS is a nonpartisan grassroots effort promoting equal rights for all Americans, working to ensure the addition of the fully-ratified 28th Amendment (Equal Rights) to the United States Constitution...
