Paul Brooks Davis
Bread and Roses, 1978

1978

About the Item

Inspired by a banner carried by young female textile workers in Lawrence, Massachusettes, James Oppenheim penned the 1912 poem “Bread and Roses”. The banner read, "We want bread and roses, too," affirming the biblical adage, "Man does not live by bread alone." In the 1970s the poem found new life as a song set to music by Mimi Farina and recorded by Judy Collins. New York's District 1199 of the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees adopted the theme as a way to celebrate the arts and humanities, still an annual event. With more than 70% of the district membership's being black or Hispanic, and almost 85% women, Davis chose an unidentified beautiful young black woman as his model. His painting of her, garlanded with wheat stalks and roses, became an icon of the period. Offer lithograph; 30x45 inches. Minor signs of handling; in otherwise very good overall vintage condition. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Vintage original work from the period.

Catalog Raisonne: See, Paul Marechal, Andy Warhol: The Complete Commissioned Record Covers Obsessed with celebrity, consumer culture, and mechanical reproduction, Pop Art king, Andy Warhol created some of the 20th century’s most iconic images. Warhol was widely influenced by popular & consumer culture, with this being evident in some of his most famous works: 32 Campbell's soup cans, Brillo pad box sculptures, and portraits of Marilyn Monroe & Mick Jagger, for example. Rejecting the standard painting and sculpting modes of his era, Warhol embraced silk-screen printmaking to achieve his characteristic hard edges and flat areas of color. The artist mentored Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat and continues to influence contemporary art around the world: His most bold successors include Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami, and Jeff Koons. Warhol has been the subject of exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, and Centre Pompidou, among other institutions. JIM DINE This is How I Remember Now (Hand Signed), 2008 Offset Lithograph Poster for exhibition of photographs by Jim Dine 32 × 24 inches Signed boldly in white marker by Jim Dine on the front Unframed Published by: Det Kongelige Bibliotek, Denmark Provenance: Jim Dine personally signed it for the present owner in 2012 at a special poetry reading that the artist gave at the Dia Art Foundation. Extremely rare when hand signed! This poster was produced in conjunction with a 2008 German exhibition of Jim Dine's photographs. Jim Dine personally signed it for the present owner in 2012 at a poetry reading that the artist gave at the Dia Art Foundation, so provenance is direct and impeccable.
