Raul Caracoza
Young Frida (green)

2006

About the Item

This is the green version of Raul Caracoza’s iconic set of serigraphs entitled Young Frida. The pink version was used as the cover illustration for the McNay Art Museum exhibition: Estampas de la Raza. This is one of two prints available from the editions that are now sold out. There is one print each left of the green, yellow and blue versions. Raul has worked with master printer José Alpuche at Self Help Graphics & Art in Los Angeles, as well as with Richard Duardo at Modern Multiples. The late Rafael Mora helped get him connected with Self Help Graphics. Much of his inspiration is drawn from the Latino culture of his surroundings in LA. His recent works focus on Latino and musical icons generated from computer illustrations. Caracoza studied art at Montebello High School, graduating in 1998. He then attended East Los Angeles College, and Digital Business and Design College in El Monte, California, in 2002. His strong personal graphic style has become very recognizable in the local arts community. Besides his graphic designs, he is also an accomplished photographer who has photographed some of the biggest concerts in Los Angeles. This image of Frida Kahlo is his best known image , about an iconic figure in the Chicano and Hispanic art world. Signed and numbered from the edition of 40.

  • Flores Para Jaurez
    By Oscar Magallanes
    Located in Palm Springs, CA
Signed and numbered. Flores Para Juarez pays homage to the women in Juarez, Mexico. The female figure in the image is a friend of Magallanes who had witnessed a lot of abuse growing up in Juarez, and emerged from her experience a very strong woman. Magallanes’ piece is part of an ongoing series of portraits of personal heroes and martyrs that also serves as a mapping of the artist’s own psyche through his cultural, historical and political influences. Oscar Magallanes was born in 1976 in Duarte, CA. He recalls, “The first art I saw were murals of Zapata and Mexica glyphs from the Chicano movement. These were juxtaposed next to homeboy role calls and Old English writing. I didn’t see a gallery or museum until I was 15.” After a troubled youth and his expulsion from high school at the age of fifteen, Oscar was accepted into the Ryman Arts program which he credits with encouraging him to pursue a career in art. From 1998 to 2003 Oscar’s studio was located in the thriving Pomona Artist Colony. Oscar also worked closely with the late Gilbert “Magu” Lujan...
