About the Item
"The two flirtatious Dublin barmaids are the 'Sirens' in the eleventh episode of Ulysses. They pull beer for their male clients in the bar of the Ormond Hotel late in the afternoon. Reflected in the mirror is jaunty Blazes Boylan with yellow straw boater eyeing bronze-haired Miss Douce by blonde-haired Miss Kennedy. Bloom with his back turned to his rival salutes an acquaintance in the dining room. The subdued colours of Hamilton's plate correspond to the air of melancholy that suffuses Joyce's episode. Joyce's themes of desire, loss and betrayal are voiced through a complex fugue of song, music and sounds within the Dublin bar.
The origins of this print are found in two working drawings of 1949. An initial pen and ink study focusses on the faces of the two barmaids, Miss Douce and Miss Kennedy, and their relationship to each other; it also includes the beerpull with its erotic connotations. The composition is fully realized in a preparatory watercolour of 1949 which became the basis for the subsequent colour plate made between 1985 and 1987. The plate developed from working drawings, a second preparatory watercolour, 3 as well as through twelve stage proofs. These show further minor adjustments to the composition. Bronze Miss Douce's grip on the beerpull is more relaxed, while the beerglass is brought closer to the beerpull to catch the foaming Dublin brew.
These subtle changes make for a closer visualization of Joyce's text: 'On the smooth jutting beerpull laid Lydia hand lightly, plumply, leave it to my hands. ... her thumb and finger passed in pity: passed, repassed and, gently touching, then slid so smoothly, slowly down, a cool firm white enamel baton protruding through their sliding ring' (U, 274).
Printing the colour plates proved to be a major problem because the French
method4 used by the Atelier Crommelynck required the ink to dry before a new colour was applied.
This prolonged the proofing process unduly and created difficulties with the registration of the plates. In the end Hamilton, with the agreement of Aldo Crommelynck, took the plates to Vienna where the printer Kurt Zein printed them using the wet-on-wet method."

Richard Hamilton
Richard Hamilton was born in Pimlico, London on February 24, 1922. He did an apprenticeship for an electrical components firm, during which time he began to take evening classes at Saint Martin’s School of Art and the Westminster School of Art.
In 1938, Hamilton enrolled in the Royal Academy of Arts. His studies here were unfortunately cut short the following year as he joined the army as a technical draughtsman for the duration of World War II. Following the war, Hamilton spent two years at the Slade School of Art, University College, London.
Hamilton began to exhibit his art at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), and taught at the Central School of Art and Design from 1952. The first major exhibition of Hamilton’s paintings was shown at the Hanover Gallery, London in 1955. In 1993, Hamilton represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale and was awarded the Golden Lion. He has been the subject of several major exhibitions at Tate in London, notably in 1970 and 1992. Other retrospectives include at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1973, MACBA in Barcelona, Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
In 2010, the Serpentine Gallery presented Hamilton’s work “Modern Moral Matters,” an exhibition which largely focused on Hamilton’s political and protest works. Hamilton has been showcased in the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s “Richard Hamilton: Pop Art Pioneer 1922-2011,” and the National Gallery’s “Richard Hamilton: The Late Works” opened in 2012.
Hamilton has been awarded with the John Moores Painting Prize (1969), the Talens Prize International (1970), the Leone d’Oro (1993), the Arnold Bode Prize (1997) and has been made a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour (CH) in 2010. The Tate gallery in London has the largest repository of Hamilton’s work, but he is collected worldwide including at the Alan Cristea Gallery and the Museo Ncional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.

The oldest of three brothers who became major 20th-century artists, including Raymond Duchamp-Villon and Marcel Duchamp, he learnt engraving at the age of 16 from his maternal grandfather, Emile-Frédéric Nicolle (1830-94), a ship-broker who was also a much appreciated amateur artist. In January 1894, having completed his studies at the Lycée Corneille in Rouen, he was sent to study at the Faculty of Law of the University of Paris, but within a year he was devoting most of his time to art, already contributing lithographs to Parisian illustrated newspapers such as Assiette au beurre. At this time he chose his pseudonym: Jack (subsequently Jacques) in homage to Alphonse Daudet’s novel Jack (1876) and Villon in appreciation of the 15th-century French poet François Villon...
