Richard Proctor
"Conquistador" Portrait Lithograph by Richard Proctor

1960

About the Item

Richard Proctor (1936-2022) was a prolific and versatile artist who produced various works, including written and pictorial experiments. He received a Bachelor of Science in Art Education in 1959 and a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Michigan State University in 1962. He taught in the art department at the University of Washington until he retired in 1992. Richard’s artwork has been displayed at the Seattle Art Museum, the Palm Springs Art Museum, the Bellevue Art Museum, the Detroit Art Institute, and the NYC Museum of Contemporary Crafts. This numbered lithograph, dated 1960, is the first in a series of 15 and is signed by the artist. It is evocatively titled "Conquistador."The work represents a minimalist expressionist portrait defined by thick black lines, featuring an emaciated face reminiscent of the work of certain German expressionists, such as Kirchner's black-and-white portraits. Proctor avoids academic representation, employing instead a few traces and marks to capture the density and embodiment of the character's personality. A dark-brown figure with a mustache and goatee appears. His face is engulfed by fixed black eyes, wide open, like two windows hiding secret memories, a gaze devoid of vulnerabilities. Conquistadors were seekers and, more generally, expedition leaders and soldiers who explored and conquered the New World from the 15th to the 16th century. Proctor finds a powerful way and technique through which reality is represented and intensely experienced by viewers. The conquistadors were not impartial explorers; instead, they were characters facing unprecedented challenges. With a few black dynamic brushstrokes and striking contrasts, Proctor sculpts a face, an identity that allows us to immerse ourselves emotionally in the conquistadors' journeys. The artwork captures not only their quest for economic prosperity but also their hopes, fears, and the intensity of their efforts. Determination, exhaustion, honor, and a fighter's state of mind are all palpable in this piece.
