About the Item
Alain Bonnefoit is a French figurative artist. His main subject depicts vast nonchalant scenes, where languid bodies assume softened poses. In this lithograph, as in the majority of his works, the woman is at the center, with an almost mystical fervor that purges all that might be foreign to her.
The drawing is composed of supple arabesques of form and light. We see a woman reclining on a bed, distinguished by her vintage wrought-iron frame, a graphic addition to the scene depicted. The pictural description of her body is a celebration of love, devoid of vulgarity but with an erotic tension running through it. Bonnefoit ingeniously intensifies the sensual essence of her model by concealing certain details of her intimacy, better to enhance her femininity and voluptuousness. The artist’s rich color palette, including the jewel-like use of red, serves to offer the model’s beauty to our gaze by contrasting with the carnal tone of her skin. Her eyes bore a unique expression of abandon.
Alain Bonnefoit was born in Paris, in 1937, and over the last 35 years has become well-known as an important and talented figurative painter. In 1953, Bonnefoit entered "l'Ecole des Arts Appliques and l'Ecole des Beaux Arts" in Paris. From 1959 to 1960, he studied Engraving and Sculpture at "l'Ecole des Beaux Arts" in Brussels. In 1962, he returned to Paris and studied sculpture with the renowned Volti. He has had major exhibitions throughout the world, including in France, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Japan, Tahiti, and the United States.
