About the Item

Old Kosher Chicken Plucker Offset Lithograph Print Seymour Rosenthal Dimensions: 22 X 17 Print: 19.25 X 13.5 Seymour Joseph Rosenthal was born and raised in the Bronx part of New York City in 1921. He was a self taught artist who started drawing at the age of 5 and didn’t stop until his dying year. Seymour’s artistry was shaped during the Great Depression. His artwork is featured, among other institutions, at The White House, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Museum of the City of New York. Rosenthal is renowned in the art world for his work with oils, egg tempera, watercolors, graphics and pen and ink drawings. Judaica and the Yiddish, Jewish life figure prominently in his work. Many of his works depicted everyday life in working-class neighborhoods similar to the one where he grew up. His art was influenced by the struggles he witnessed, such as the Great Depression and the Holocaust. One such piece was “Homage to Six Million,” a remembrance of the Holocaust, which Frances still keeps in her home. In the lithograph, Rosenthal urged the world to, “Never forgive or forget.” He had a great passion and respect for the struggles of working Americans an affinity and sensibility formed from his exposure to the Ashcan and WPA artists of the period. as well as a deep love of his Jewish faith, both of which are amplified in his renderings. He is survived by his beloved wife Frances, a daughter, a son, and four grandchildren. His works are in the permanent collection of various museums around the world such as the “N.Y. Metropolitan Museum of Art” and the “Technion Museum” in Haifa Israel.

Vintage Russian Shtetl Scene, Judaica Lithograph
By Anatoli Lvovich Kaplan
Located in Surfside, FL
Pencil signed and dated, colored Judaica Lithograph. Anatoli Lwowitch Kaplan was a Russian painter, sculptor and printmaker, whose works often reflect his Jewish origins. his father was a butcher in Rahachow which was at that time within the Jewish Pale of Settlement in Russia. His background was therefore not dissimilar to that of Marc Chagall, born a generation earlier in 1887, and although their lives were very different, their art has much in common. The shtetl figures in many of Kaplan's paintings - autobiographical references are very clear in The Butcher's Shop (1972) and Tailor's Shops (1975) and in the many illustrations which he was to create to the works of Sholem Aleichem...
