Shepard Fairey Natural Spring, 2016 Lithograph Signed and dated 2016 in pencil Open Edition 91.5 x 61 cm Born in southern California in 1970, Shepard Fairey was heavily influenced by the growing punk rock and skateboarding lifestyle. He had little interest in skateboarding until his friend left his skateboard over at his house one night. On his fourteenth birthday, Shepard Fairey's parents bought him a skateboard, which led Fairey to a world of “Thrasher Magazine”, the Sex Pistols and other punk rock/skateboarding influences. Using a screen printer in his art class, he figured out how to create t-shirts from stencils for himself and his friends, which later gave way to his simplistic style that he uses today in his artwork. He left southern California to pursue an education in Rhode Island, but found that it seemed to be hindering his creative experience rather than offering new ideas. When he was offered a job at "Jobless Antiwork Wear" designing t-shirts back where he grew up in California. Through these influences, he was able to step inside a world of a counter-hegemonic force, allowing himself to be part of the counterculture that was booming in the mid 80's. His artistic style was created from this new world, creating his own stencils and t-shirts, Fairey was slowly developing his own voice in a world that was beginning to speak out against the forces that were in control. He had printed out thousands of stickers for bands he enjoyed to distribute in an underground fashion, but it was not until MTV offered to put up Fairey's most iconic image: "Andrew the Giant has a posse" and ran it as a bumper ad that he was given a major break and tons of exposure. Fairey has since been using his artistic means to advocate political ideologies including most recently supporting Barack Obama for his presidential race in 2008.
