About the Item

EXTREMELY RARE POSTER FOR LINCOLN'S 1860 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN HON. ABRAHAM LINCOLN. LEOPOLD GROZELIER (American, 1830-1865) after THOMAS HICKS (American, 1823-1890). Lithograph, 1860. Published by W. William Schaus, and printed by J. H. Bufford's, Boston. Large sheet 27 x 21 inches, likely full. Image to the extent of the incomplete printed portion including Bufford text, 22 1/2 x 16 inches The first state, before the extended title ("Hon. Abraham Lincoln / Republican Candidate for the Presidency, 1860"), without Grozelier's printed signature, THE SHOULDERS UNFINISHED, without the addition of the publishing and copyright lines. At the lower right sheet edge of this state is J. H. Bufford's, Boston. Rare in both states. The large sheet In generally good condition with slight discoloration accentuated in the photos.. Some remnants of back board stain on the verso and a few very minor losses at the sheet edges. In 1860, Lincoln's campaign commissioned Thomas Hicks to paint a portrait of Lincoln at his office in Springfield, IL specifically for this lithograph. It is known as "The Springfield Portrait" now in the Chicago Historical Society. A photograph taken by Hesler was also used by Hicks as a source for the painted portrait, as apparently Lincoln could not be available for the number of sittings that would have been required were the portrait painted fully from life. "Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln by Distinguished Men of His Time" by Allen Thorndike Rice quotes Lincoln as saying "It will give the people of the East a correct idea how I look at home, and, in fact, how I look in my office. I think the picture has a somewhat pleasanter expression than I usually have, but that, perhaps, is not an objection" (Page 602). Four other examples of this state have been located in Institutions, The Library of Congress, the National Portrait Gallery, the Boston Anthenaeum and the Library Company of Philadelphia.. In each case the sheets are smaller. In addition all of those have more discoloration, and or foxing. THIS OFFERED EXAMPLE APPEARS TO BE THE ONLY ONE THAT IS A FULL OR NEAR FULL SHEET An example of the 2nd State, the published edition with the additional text: Republican Candidate For President and the publishing line sold at Christie's, NY on Jan 6, 2003. It had smaller margins, more discoloration and was laid down on tissue. It sold for $7,170 Provenance: There is a label affixed to wood backing of the frame with a letter to P.T. Sprague dated 1, February, 1929 from a dealer asking him for a photograph of the Lincoln portrait. There is another label stating "Portrait of Abraham Lincoln when he was about 35 years old . The old print owned by P.R. Sprague of Brattle Street, Cambridge. Mr Sprague is a descendent of Lincoln and treasures this picture highly" Subsequent research has not yet confirmed that Mr. Sprague is a Lincoln descendent but the label is 92 years old.
