About the Item

'Melancholic Muses II', one of a poignant set of six signed artist proof lithographs by the celebrated Spanish artist from Barcelona, Vicenç Caraltó (circa 1960s). This collection of lithographs captures the essence of melancholy through the central female figures, each rendered with a vivid palette and detailed backgrounds that are a hallmark of Caraltó's expressive style. Each lithograph has its own title. It may be purchased individually or as a set - simply enquire with the gallery on this platform if more than one is desired. Each example is in good overall condition and has been beautifully framed with anti-reflective glass. 1. Guitar Serenade: The woman holds a guitar, her expression reflecting a wistful longing, enveloped in a symphony of colours that evoke a sense of musical solitude. 2. Bird Whisperer: With a gentle bird in her hand, the woman's serene yet sorrowful gaze captures a deep connection with nature's fleeting moments. 3. Cat's Embrace: Cradling a cat on her lap, the woman's tranquil demeanour conveys a quiet, introspective affection. 4. Solitary Bloom: Seated at a table with a bouquet of flowers, her pensive expression and the vibrant surroundings merge to create a scene of contemplative beauty. 5. Market Day: Standing with a basket of vegetables in one hand and flowers in the other, the woman's presence symbolises both the abundance and the melancholy of life's seasons. 6. Caged Melody: Sitting with her hands folded, surrounded by caged birds, the woman’s wistful gaze hints at themes of freedom and confinement, a recurring motif in Caraltó's oeuvre. About the Artist: Vicenç Caraltó i Salvà (1936-1995). After training at the Lonja School and the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts, both in his hometown of Barcelona, Caraltó moved to Paris in 1960 to further his studies thanks to a Cercle Mallol scholarship from the Institut Français in Barcelona. He was a member of the Cercle Mallol, and also of Círculo Artístico de Sant Lluc and the Real Círculo of Barcelona. In his early stages he was influenced by Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) and Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) and later by Picasso (1881-1973). A painter, a drawing artist and an engraver, he also illustrated poetry books and designed costumes for the theatre. His work has been exhibited in several European countries and is included in public collections in Barcelona and Ibiza.
