About the Item
'Thomas Hearne'
Soft ground etching by William Daniell RA (1769-1837) after George Dance the Younger (1741-1825), 1809.
Thomas Hearne (1744-1817) was an English landscape painter, engraver and illustrator. In 1777, in conjunction with engraver William Byrne (1743-1805), he began work on the drawings for 'The Antiquities of Great Britain'. He is said to have done much to revive attention to Gothic architecture, and to have been one of the founders of the English school of watercolours. Hearne's art influenced Thomas Girtin and J M W Turner. From 1781 to 1802 Hearne exhibited drawings of landscape and antiquarian remains at the Royal Academy, London. He was a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries .
George Dance was an architect, draughtsman and founder member of the Royal Academy. This portrait comes from a series of chalk portraits that he did of his friends, 72 of which were engraved and published (1808-1814) by William Daniell who was an engraver as well as a renown landscape painter.
Accompanied by an original text sheet describing the sitter.
