1971 original travel poster by Pagès for Air France promoting travel to Canada

1971

About the Item

The 1971 original travel poster by Pagès for Air France promoting travel to Canada is a striking example of how mid-20th century travel advertising captured the imagination of would-be travelers. With its focus on bold design and a sense of adventure, this poster reflects the growing enthusiasm for international travel and Air France's role in making distant destinations more accessible. Pagès' work for this campaign is emblematic of the era's modernist artistic trends, skillfully blending abstract forms with cultural and geographical references to convey the vast and varied appeal of Canada. Pagès, renowned for his innovative use of abstract shapes and colors, likely employs these elements to evoke the expansive landscapes and natural beauty of Canada. Though the specific visual details are not described, his style often incorporates geometric patterns and vibrant contrasts that could symbolize Canada's iconic features, such as its towering mountains, endless forests, and dynamic urban centers. The abstract nature of the design serves to create a sense of wonder and possibility, drawing viewers into the allure of exploring the vast Canadian wilderness and cosmopolitan cities. The word "Canada" is likely presented in a clean, modern font, emphasizing the destination's name with simplicity and elegance. Below this, the Air France logo, traditionally in a bold blue, reinforces the airline's commitment to providing a sophisticated and reliable travel experience. The minimalist text ensures that the viewer's focus remains on the visual elements of the poster, which communicate the essence of Canada as a destination rich in natural beauty and cultural diversity. In the 1970s, Canada was emerging as a popular destination for travelers seeking both adventure and tranquility. From the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains and the serene landscapes of the Great Lakes to the vibrant cultural scenes in cities like Montreal and Toronto, Canada offered a wide range of experiences. Pagès' abstract design likely captures this diversity, conveying the country's unique charm and inviting travelers to explore its myriad attractions. The choice of an abstract and modernist design reflects Air France's branding strategy during this period, positioning the airline as a gateway to the world's most exciting and diverse destinations. By commissioning contemporary artists like Pagès, Air France not only advertised its routes but also associated itself with the cutting-edge artistic movements of the time, appealing to a global audience of sophisticated and adventurous travelers. Today, the 1971 Air France Canada poster by Pagès is valued not only as a piece of travel advertising but also as a work of art that encapsulates the spirit of the era. Collectors and art enthusiasts appreciate the poster for its aesthetic qualities and its historical significance, representing a time when international travel was becoming an increasingly integral part of cultural exchange and personal discovery. In conclusion, Pagès' 1971 poster for Air France promoting travel to Canada is a masterful example of how art and advertising can merge to create a compelling narrative. It captures the essence of Canada as a destination full of natural wonder and cultural richness, while also reflecting the excitement and optimism of a time when the world was opening up to new possibilities through the convenience of air travel. Delicate Abstract Lithograph with Blue and Orange
Located in Soquel, CA
Delicate Abstract Lithograph with Blue and Orange by American Beat artist Will Peterson (1928-1994.) This lithograph blends the linework and movement of abstract impressionism with a color field-esque composition. The vibrant orange rectangle in the center of the piece is bracketed by a contrasting cobalt border. The edges of these shapes are softened by delicate linework and areas of hazy lighter blues and whites. Overall, this creates an atmospheric and striking piece. Lithograph is printed on wove paper which is fixed to a larger piece of handmade paper containing the artists signature and a small embossing found on his other pieces from this time period. This paper is displayed on top of a linen covered board with sturdy wood edges and a plexiglass over over the entire piece. Will Peterson was born in Chicago in 1928 to German immigrant parents. He contracted Polio when he was in High School and thus spent much of his early years ill. During this time he started working as a cartoonist for his high school’s paper. He started his official art studies at Wilber Wright College in Chicago and later earned a BA and a MA at Michigan State University. Here he studied print making and lithography under John S. deMartelly. He began enjoying artistic success while still in graduate school, exhibiting at the Detroit Art Institute, the Terry Art Institute, the National Print Exhibition, and the Boston Printmakers. Peterson was drafted into the army in 1952 and thus spent time in Korea and Japan. His time as an educational specialist in Hokkaido was a formative experience for him and his interest in Japanese calligraphy and other arts influenced his later work. Upon returning to the United States, he moved to Oakland, California. He became involved with the beat movement and after founding the Bay Printmakers Society with fellow artist Mel Strawn...

Abstract Color Field Lithograph in Pale Blue and Brown
Located in Soquel, CA
Abstract Color Field Lithograph in Pale Blue and Brown by American Beat artist Will Peterson (1928-1994.) This lithograph blends the linework and movement of abstract impressionism with a color field-esque composition. A long copper-brown rectangle shines through from the bottom layer of the colors. It is then crossed in multiple places by black linework and hatching. Around this shape a pale cornflower blue acts as a frame and crosses the brown shape in the center. The addition of the cool black and blue tones creates a sense of warmth in the underlying shape. Lithograph is printed on wove paper which is fixed to a larger piece of handmade paper containing the artists signature and a small embossing found on his other pieces from this time period.
