A Set of Four Prints from Five Aquatints
Sheet size: 22.8 x 22.8 cm (each)
Overall: 50.8 x 50.8 cm
69 x 69 x 4 cm (framed)
This set of four aquatints is a quintessential example of Robert Mangold's rigorous and elegant exploration of geometric abstraction. A key figure in the Minimalist movement, Mangold's work is defined by a systematic investigation into the fundamental elements of art: line, shape, color, and surface. In this series, he uses a simple, repeated format—a square within a square—as a framework to explore complex perceptual and spatial relationships.
The composition is arranged in a precise two-by-two grid, creating a dialogue between the four distinct panels. Mangold employs a restrained yet warm palette, alternating between a vibrant, saturated orange and a muted, earthy brown. Within each colored field, he superimposes delicately drawn lines—some are elegant, sweeping arcs, while others are sharp, decisive diagonals. These lines interact with the underlying structure of the nested squares, sometimes seeming to complete a hidden circle or transect the plane, creating a subtle tension between the drawn gesture and the architectural form.
Through the systematic recombination of these few elements, Mangold invites the viewer into a process of quiet contemplation and visual analysis. The work is not about emotional expression, but about the purity of form and the complex interplay between part and whole, interior and exterior, and the drawn line versus the physical edge of the print. The result is a work that is both intellectually structured and visually serene, rewarding sustained looking with a heightened awareness of form, balance, and color.

Robert Mangold
Robert Mangold (born October 12, 1937) is an American minimalist artist. “Robert Mangold’s paintings,” wrote Michael Kimmelman in the New York Times in 1997, “are more complicated to describe than they seem, which is partly what’s good about them: the way they invite intense scrutiny, which, in the nature of good art, is its own reward.” His works are comprised often of simple elements which are put together through complex means. Mangold's work challenges the typical connotations of what a painting is or could be, and his works often appear as objects rather than images. Elements refer often to architectural elements or have the feeling of an architect's hands. He almost always works in extensive series, often carried through both paintings and works on paper.
