“Martí con los Obreros” (1979) is an early lithograph by Roberto Fabelo, created at the UNEAC Printmaking Workshop in Havana, under the direction of Víctor Gómez and printed by Roger Aguilar. Unlike his well-known surrealist figures, this work reveals his academic side, showcasing his mastery of drawing and a solid realism that reflects the depth of his artistic training.
The scene portrays José Martí surrounded by workers, evoking a historical moment rich in symbolism for Cuban identity. It speaks of social justice and collective values, deeply rooted in Martí’s ideals.
Collecting this piece offers a glimpse into a different Fabelo: the artist in transition, before fully developing his dreamlike imagery. Its rarity in the market, historical significance, and impeccable technical quality make it an essential work for those looking to understand the evolution of one of Cuba’s foremost contemporary artists.
A graphic gem for collectors who value both cultural legacy and the foundational stages of an artist whose work now transcends borders.
