About the Item

Echos, 2019 Etching inch 11.8 x 7.8 Young Sicilian (Italy) painter, Simone Geraci was born in 1985 in Palermo, where he lives and works. In 2012, he graduated from Accademia di Belle Arti of Palermo with a major in art graphics. Painter, illustrator and engraver, he works with both Italian and International art galleries. Today, he is the artistic director of the publishing house "Il Palindromo". His artworks are characterized by monotone colour, his preferred colour is red, even if in the last years he expanding to the colours of blue and natural. The work of Simone Geraci, a young artist from Palermo, is a micro-world of seemingly unmovable figures, saturated colours and suspended gazes. Simone's Women, his portraits and nudes harmonise perfectly with the figures and geometric shapes created by the use of slate as an element of rupture, censure and paradox. The creative process begins with the search for portrait photos or nudes, often found on the web or in flea markets. He seeks in them the suggestion necessary to start speculating on the compositional structure and the possible relations and tensions within the work. He does not use any particular methods of transferring the image onto canvas or slate, in order to avoid a rigid execution he prefers to sketch the figure directly in fusaggine or directly in oil, preferring the almost natural tendency to 'manierate' the forms represented. Such a direct approach makes possible, right from the sketching stage, to correct or modify those parts that do not cooperate with the balancing act between forms and space. The subjects represented are taken from archive photos, vintage nudes or portraits that refer to a canon of beauty and forms from a past not so distant from our present. There is an intention to suggest to the viewer an idea of suspended time, in which the figures or portraits are harnessed and helpless. It is a state of apparent immobility in which tensions and actions are confined to the gazes, their vanishing points and the slightest, cautious gestures. The monochrome gives the composition and the subject represented an idea of suspension; it participates in the creation of a micro-world in which time ceases its natural flow. It is a way of emphasising and harnessing a gestural expressiveness taken to the minimum in which the subjects converse with the geometric figures, true architectures that often accompany the viewer's gaze towards the fulcrum of the work. It is a style of painting that often, or almost always, turns its attention to the art of the past, to its manners and materials

Ruse 1800" watermark lower right. Mark Catesby's The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands is generally credited as the first published work to provide illustrations and descriptions of North American flora and fauna. From 1722-1726 Catesby, an English naturalist, ranged over South Carolina, Georgia and the Bahamas sketching and collecting specimens of native plants and animals. Skunks are North and South American mammals in the family Mephitidae. While related to polecats and other members of the weasel family, skunks have as their closest Old World relatives the stink badgers. The animals are known for their ability to spray a liquid with a strong, unpleasant scent. Biography: Mark Catesby (24 March 1683 – 23 December 1749) was an English naturalist. Between 1729 and 1747 Catesby published his Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, the first published account of the flora and fauna of North America. It included 220 plates of birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, mammals and plants. Little is known of Catesby's early life. He was born in eastern England in 1683. Although Catesby does not appear to have attended university or studied for the Bar, he was sufficiently educated to write clear English and Latin. His interest in and knowledge of plants may have derived from his uncle, who maintained a botanical garden. Catesby also appears to have benefited from an acquaintance with John Ray, a leading English naturalist of the 17th century and the co-author of an early classic study of birds...
