About the Item

Abraham Munting (1626 – 1683) Naauwkeurige Beschryving der Aardgewassen Leiden and Ultrech, Germany, 1696 Publishers: Pieter vander Aa and Francois Halma Folio, 15 ¼ “ x 10 ¼ “ Large Paper Copy, 18 ½ “ x 12” 243 Engraved Plates Published posthumously, this work was truly Abraham Munting’s crowning achievement. His father, Henricus Munting, was the founder the botanic garden at the University of Groningen. Abraham became a professor of botany at the university and oversaw a grand revision of the gardens to include many of the rare species that were sent to him by friends exploring the Americas, Dutch and East Indies, Africa, and Asia. Whether arriving as a few seeds wrapped in burlap or a withered plant suffering from the sea air and salt water, these ‘exotiques’ found their way into the newly expanded garden. Munting’s works on medical-botany were highly important treatises offering new information based in no small part on the variety of plants he had on hand to study. This great work is set apart not only by its text (it is one of the earliest works considering Japanese botany) but also by its unique design. One artist, Jan Goeree (16-70 – 1731), was a trained artist who studied with Gerard de Laresse. Goeree has added air of refinement to this florilegium. Each flower has a single page dedicated to showing it in bloom with a banner heralding its name. Often times the plant is placed in an antique urn with perhaps a rustic plaque holding its name. Perhaps the most sought after are the ones with charming landscape backgrounds. Another talented man who contributed to this work was the engraver Joseph Mulder (1659-1710). His resume includes the later work by Maria Merian on insects from Surinam. Only one plate in the Naauwekeurige is signed, 201, and it bears the conceit of the engraver Mulder. Upon his death, Munting left a large body of drawings to be included in this work. The capable hand of Messrs. Goeree, Mulder, et al, completed the work. It stands as both a tribute to botany and ornamental illustration.

Dish Garden in Blue and White China Japanese Woodblock Original Hand-color. Meji Period. Circa 1895. The enthusiasm for nature prints has spanned the centuries. By the mid-nineteenth century these works, illustrating varieties of flowers in naturalistic styles, had reached a peak of perfection. Each artistic form in traditional printing sought to enhance the beauty of botany. In the woodblock style, as it true for engravings and lithographs, it is imperative that the carving of each block be exacting as they must create an image true to that seen in nature. For many, the dish garden is a re-creation of a favorite landscape design. It provides an opportunity to build a perfect pairing of ornament...
