About the Item
The pale gray-green of this monotype calls to mind the celadon glaze of Japanese pottery. Each was made using freshly-cut long-stemmed wild iris (iris douglasiana) that grow along the California coast. Their impossibly long stems bend with their own weight, creating beautiful arcs and lines in every composition.
Although this looks like a screen print or woodcut, it is actually a form of 19th-century photography, a cyanotype. This pale blue-gray is a very difficult color to achieve with the cyanotype antique photographic process. The normal color of a cyanotype (blueprint) is dark blue and white. However, this slate gray and cream cyanotype was made by dramatically altering the ratio of two photo chemicals in the mix before brushing it on the paper.
Every one of the artist's botanical cyanotypes is an entirely unique monotype as the freshly cut plants are laid in that one exact composition only once before they wilt. There is no copper plate; there is no ink or printing press.
Unframed.
Hand-printed on cotton watercolor paper with straight edges, not deckled edges.

Christine So is an American printmaker, photographer and painter living in the hills across the bay from her hometown, San Francisco. She is best known for her blue and white cyanotype photographs of forests shrouded in fog. The Foggy Woods series is ever-growing as the artist continually hikes these hills which are often foggy at dawn. She explores radically different ways to use this antique photographic medium with and without out a camera. At times her blue prints look like screen prints. At others like abstract watercolors. Besides printing photographs from negatives, botanicals using entire branches, altering the chemical recipe to obtain novel colors, and creating abstract cyanotypes of deliberate patterns, she also paints images using the light-sensitive solution and prints a pattern within them. These last works she calls “cyanotype paintings”. The multiple-day process depends on being able to see while painting in a dark room so as to not expose the light-sensitive painted silhouette before it’s time. She named her series of botanical paintings which have a fine blue and white pattern “Delft Garden” after the Dutch painted porcelain. WHAT IS A CYANOTYPE?
The cyanotype (a.k.a. sun-print) process is one of the oldest in the history of photography, dating back to the 1840's.
Cyanotypes were then made famous by Anna Atkins, considered the first female photographer. Inspired by nature, we feel the need to look back at a craft that is handmade, analogue, and using an all-natural light source: the sun.
Our cyanotypes are made by coating high-quality Italian watercolor paper with a light-sensitive emulsion. We then expose it in direct sunlight for several minutes using a photo negative to get the best image quality. Finally, the print is washed and fixed with water to stop the reaction and prevent fading.
What you get is an amazing, royal blue image...
