About the Item

Artist: Lady Jane Webb Loudon (British, 1800 - 1858) 9.5 x 8 in. page. 12 x 14 in. frame. A "chromolithographic" plate from The Ladies' Flower-Garden of Ornamental Annuals. By Mrs. Loudon. Publisher: William Smith, London. This antique botanical illustration features a vibrant and detailed array of plant life against a simple, unadorned background. The dominant colors are striking yellows and deep greens, with touches of reddish-brown and white. The composition depicts five varieties of flowing plants found in the genus Loasa. Developing fruits and seed pods, add to the botanical accuracy. The style emphasizes precise rendering and naturalistic colors. The overall impression is one of intricate natural beauty, meticulously captured with an eye for detail. This piece is beautifully framed with glass protecting it. It is ready to hang in an antique frame with handprinted finish. Artist Biography: "The love of flowers is calculated to improve our best feelings, and subdue our bad ones; and we can hardly contemplate the beauty and richness of a flower-garden without feeling our hearts dilate with gratitude to that Almighty Being who has made all these lovely blossoms, and given them to us for our use." Said Jane Webb Loudon, a statement that embodies the deep admiration she felt for her botanical subjects. Books of floral illustration were a popular form of publication in the 19th century. Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden, published by W. Smith, London, was one of the earliest examples of this genre. The series included five titles illustrating hundreds of specimens of flowers with their scientific name. Each illustration is a work of "chromolithography", a 19th century form of color printmaking, complete with the scientific names. The rigor that Loudon applies to depicting each plant's detailed anatomy, in its seasonal phases, speaks to her dedication as a scientist and naturalist. Loudon created the series for women, and the publications inspired many ladies of Victorian England to participate in science, gardening, and exploration of the natural world.
