About the Item

Nautical Studies is a series of ongoing drypoint renderings of iconic items associated with the sea. Based on common-place objects and symbols within nautical culture, these drypoint prints are offered up like tattoos on a hardened sailor’s bicep. These are icons that have extended into the contemporary vernacular of our global language. This series of works function as a distilled and symbolic representation of the sea, both in form and function. Originally show as part of a larger body of work “Sea Levels”, these Nautical Studies are an accompaniment to larger narratives seen in some of Laine’s mezzotint prints. They are often included as elements within other pieces of his imagery, and are inherently self-referential building upon the greater theme of the sea that Laine has been exploring in his most recent work. Bio For Laine, traditional printmaking has the ability to fully embrace both the world of art and that of craft. It is as much a means of production as it is a source of inspiration and preservation. In his recent work, oceans have been a major source of inspiration. As with all large bodies of water, oceans represent unique visual landscapes captured through a rich and colourful history of imagery and narrative. Inspired by these elements, Sea Levels reflects a very personal interpretation of the vast and often mystical power of the ocean. Laine has been exploring and experimenting with different printmaking techniques to convey his own visual rendition of and interpret seascapes as somebody who has seldom experienced it first-hand. Inspired by stories, objects, and the landscape of the ocean, Sea Levels is woven together as a nautical tapestry. Laine Groeneweg is printmaker currently living in Hamilton, Canada. He received his BFA from York University in 2004 and subsequently trained as a professional printmaker at Fondazione Il Bisonte Per Lo Studio Dell’Arte Grafica in Florence, Italy. He is most widely recognized for his work in mezzotint & etching and exploring the possibilities of traditional technique in the wake of more contemporary production methods. His prints have been exhibited Nationally and Internationally in Canada, Australia, Russia, Japan, Finland, Italy, Taiwan and the United States. In 2013, Laine founded Smokestack, a custom printmaking space where he currently works and collaborates with others.
