Note: Chrysanthemums, a symbol of the sun, the Japanese consider the orderly unfolding of the chrysanthemum’s petals to represent perfection. Confucius once suggested they be used as an object of meditation. It’s said that a single petal of this celebrated flower placed at the bottom of a wine glass will encourage a long and healthy life. Chrysanthemums are the flower for the month of November.

Aoyama Masaharu, also known as Seiji Aoyama, was born in 1893 in Saitama Prefecture and passed away in 1969. He honed his skills in traditional Japanese ink painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts before securing a position at the Imperial Household Museum upon graduation. While providing stability, this job also allowed him to explore his artistic endeavors. Despite the security it offered, Aoyama Masaharu chose to retire from this position in the late 1930s.
Primarily recognized as a painter, Aoyama Masaharu was deeply influenced by the sosaku hanga art movement in his printmaking pursuits. His print portfolio consisted of works that were self-carved, self-printed, and self-published, alongside those published by Ishiyama.
What distinguishes Aoyama Masaharu's prints from those of many other sosaku hanga artists is his exceptional technical proficiency. It is evident that Aoyama had a mastery of the artisanal skills of the trade, surpassing many of his contemporaries in this aspect.

Born in Saitama prefecture. Also known as Aoyama Seiji and Aoyama Masaharu. Studied ink painting at Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Served in Imperial Household Museum until his retirement in 1936. Exhibited in Teiten and in the Nihon Sosaku-Hanga Kyokai show in 1929. Self-carved blocks. Some self-printed; others produced with assistance from the publisher Ishiyama and printers in his employ. Works of the 1950s included a view of gulls over rippling water. Prints sometimes signed Seiji and sealed Ao with the first character of his family name.** Taken in whole, or in part, with permission from: Merritt, Helen and Nanako Yamada.
