About the Item

This exquisite lithograph and pochoir after Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled Faunes et Flore d'Antibes XI (Fauns and Flora of Antibes XI), from the folio, Picasso, Faunes et Flore d'Antibes, 1960, originates from the 1960 edition published by Au Pont des Arts, Paris, and printed by Atelier Daniel Jacomet, Paris, 1960. Faunes et Flore d'Antibes XI (Fauns and Flora of Antibes XI) celebrates Picasso’s enduring fascination with the mythic and the Mediterranean. The work evokes the artist’s joyful rediscovery of classical forms, animal vitality, and lyrical sensuality following his move to the south of France. With its radiant palette and fluid linework, the composition embodies the timeless harmony between nature, mythology, and artistic creation that defined his Antibes period. Executed as a lithograph and pochoir on velin pur chiffon d'Arches paper, this work measures 20.08 x 25.98 inches. Unsigned, as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Atelier Daniel Jacomet, whose refined use of pochoir and lithographic color separation perfectly conveys Picasso’s dynamic brushwork and tonal depth. About the Publication: Faunes et Flore d'Antibes (1960) was issued by Au Pont des Arts, Paris, as a fine art portfolio dedicated to Pablo Picasso’s joyous return to classical themes and Mediterranean light during his years in Antibes. The folio revisits imagery from his celebrated series of murals and ceramics created for the Musée Picasso (then Château Grimaldi) in Antibes, capturing the mythological exuberance, vitality, and sensual lyricism that defined his work in the south of France. Printed by the distinguished Atelier Daniel Jacomet, the portfolio exemplifies the precision and artistry of mid-century Parisian pochoir production—each plate meticulously hand-stenciled and printed to reproduce the luminous color and texture of the original gouaches and drawings. The collaboration between Picasso and Daniel Jacomet, who was among the foremost master printers of the period, produced editions that balanced fidelity to the artist’s vision with technical innovation. Faunes et Flore d'Antibes was issued in a limited edition of CCCL examples, plus XXX hors commerce examples, and was distributed through Au Pont des Arts, one of the leading Parisian art publishers devoted to modern masters. The publication stands as both a celebration of Picasso’s enduring creative vigor and an homage to the harmony between art, myth, and nature that permeated his Antibes works. Today, the portfolio is considered a hallmark of postwar French printmaking and remains a prized collector’s edition for its exceptional craftsmanship, rarity, and historical significance. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision revolutionized modern art and defined the visual language of the 20th century. A child prodigy from Malaga, Spain, Picasso's career spanned more than seven decades and encompassed an astonishing range of styles and innovations—from the melancholic Blue and romantic Rose periods to his pioneering invention of Cubism with Georges Braque, which shattered conventional notions of perspective and form. Influenced by the bold expressiveness of El Greco, the structure of Cezanne, and the vitality of African and Iberian sculpture, Picasso became a central figure of the Paris avant-garde, working in creative dialogue with contemporaries such as Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. His insatiable experimentation extended across painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, forever expanding the boundaries of artistic expression. A master of reinvention, Picasso profoundly shaped generations of artists who followed—from Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, and Jean-Michel Basquiat to Jeff Koons and Banksy—cementing his status as a timeless cultural icon whose works remain among the most sought after worldwide. His landmark painting Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O) achieved a record-breaking sale of 179,365,000 USD at Christie's, New York, on May 11, 2015, affirming Picasso's enduring legacy as one of the most influential and valuable artists in history.
