About the Item

POITEAU, A. and P. TURPIN. Traité des arbres fruitiers: A Set of Four Apples H. Perronneau for T. Delachausée, Paris, 1807-1835. A set of Four Apples, fine stipple-engraved plates printed in colours and finished by hand. Four plates from 'One of the finest and rarest books on fruit' (Dunthorne p.192). This series takes its title from Duhamel's Traité of 1768, it is an independent work and was intended as Poiteau and Turpin's homage to the earlier work. A team of over twenty engravers was involved. The colour printing was by Langlois, the great French colour-printer who supervised much of Redouté's work.

Jean-Louis himself first exhibited at the Salon when only fourteen years of age, showing paintings of bouquets, a vase of flowers and other small botanical studies. Immediately he was commissioned by Monsieur Roussel to paint the flowers in the wealthy landowner's garden. Brown, was a notable English painter and illustrator from London. His early career was spent as a London cabinet-maker specializing in painted furniture, often with floral decorations. Brookshaw also published supplementary drawing manuals on fruit, flowers, and birds. Pomona Britannicaa London 1804-1812 Engravings with original hand-coloring George Brookshaw's splendid "Pomona Brittanica" is a masterpiece among 19th-century British flower books. The publication of the "Pomona" marked the re-emergence of the acclaimed artist into the public eye after a total disappearance of nearly a decade. Initially a cabinet-make specializing in painted furniture decorated with borders of flowers, Brookshaw appears to have abandoned this career at about the same time as he parted company with his wife and began living with Elizabeth Stanton, and under the assumed name of G. Brown (c.1794-1804). During this time he earned a living as a teacher of flower-painting and on the proceeds of his first painting manual "A New Treatise on Flower Painting", 1797. Characterized by the highest standards of production and artistic quality, the superb illustrations that Brookshaw drew and engraved for the "Pomona" remain perhaps the most sumptuous and distinctive of the early 19th century.
