San Lazzaro, a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism, believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, London, and New York, including Mourlot, Curwen, and Universal Graphics, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. Through XXe Siecle, San Lazzaro preserved the creative spirit of the avant-garde during and after World War II, championing freedom of expression and the evolution of abstraction, Surrealism, and modern thought. Over nearly four decades, the journal shaped international taste and defined the intellectual landscape of postwar art publishing. Today, XXe Siecle remains celebrated for its extraordinary synthesis of art, literature, and design, an enduring testament to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro's belief that the visual arts are the soul of the modern age. About the Artist: Renato Guttuso (1911–1987) was an Italian painter, draftsman, and intellectual visionary whose vibrant realism, political engagement, and expressive modernity made him one of the most important European artists of the 20th century. A master of color and composition, Guttuso redefined realism for the modern age, merging the classical traditions of Italian painting with the formal daring and social consciousness of the avant-garde. Born in Bagheria, Sicily, he was profoundly influenced by the intense Mediterranean light, the earthy tones of the Sicilian landscape, and the dignity of rural life—elements that would define his art for decades. After studying in Palermo and later settling in Rome, Guttuso became immersed in the city’s artistic and intellectual ferment, engaging with leading figures of modernism including Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. Drawing from their innovations while forging his own path, he developed a fiercely humanist vision that fused the structural intelligence of Cezanne with the expressive power of Van Gogh and the moral conviction of Picasso. In the 1930s and 1940s, as Italy fell under fascism, Guttuso defied state-imposed aesthetics and embraced an art of resistance, painting emotionally charged works such as Crucifixion (1941) and La Fucilazione (The Firing Squad, 1945), which, like Picasso’s Guernica, stood as universal condemnations of oppression and violence. His expressive brushwork, vivid palette, and intense sense of empathy established him as a moral force in European art. After World War II, Guttuso became a leading voice in Italian Neorealism, depicting scenes of laborers, markets, and rallies with monumental dignity and coloristic vigor. Works such as Comizio (1949) and La Spiaggia (1955) celebrated the resilience of ordinary life while reflecting his belief that art must serve both beauty and justice. His later nudes, still lifes, and portraits from the 1960s and 1970s revealed the same mastery of color and composition but with deeper introspection, blending sensuality and contemplation in ways that recalled both Titian and Matisse. A committed Communist and lifelong advocate for artistic freedom, Guttuso viewed painting as an act of conscience, and his friendship with writers like Alberto Moravia, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Pablo Neruda reinforced his belief in art’s ethical and poetic power. Over time, his influence extended far beyond Italy, shaping generations of artists—from politically engaged painters such as Leon Golub to Neo-Expressionists like Anselm Kiefer—who admired his ability to unite form, emotion, and ideology. Honored with the Lenin Peace Prize in 1972 and celebrated in retrospectives worldwide, Guttuso became both a cultural ambassador and a moral compass in postwar art. His paintings are held in major museums including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Tate Modern (London), Centre Pompidou (Paris), and Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna (Rome). Standing alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, Renato Guttuso remains one of the defining figures of 20th-century art—a painter whose union of aesthetic brilliance and social consciousness continues to inspire artists, collectors, and scholars around the world. His highest auction record was achieved by Comizio (1949), which sold for $1.46 million USD at Sotheby’s, Milan, on May 24, 2007, reaffirming his enduring legacy as one of the most passionate, politically engaged, and collectible painters of the modern era.
