About the Item

Brightly colored lithographic print of magnolia blossoms by Sally Bookman (British, b. 1943). Signed and numbered by the artist in the lower left corner ("124/300 Sally Bookman"). Presented in a gold colored frame with a double mat and glass. Image size: 17"H x 23.5"W Sally Bookman (British, b. 1943) began her artistic career in London, England, where she was born and where she studied oil painting as a youth at St. Martin's School of Art and Design. In her early twenties, she moved to the United States, by way of Australia, and completed her formal college education in California. Years later, after marriage and starting a family, Sally's interest in painting was rekindled, but not with oil painting. During the late 1980's she began exploring water-based media, and soon produced a wide variety of images that evidenced her love for the vibrancy and richness of watercolor. Her subject matter focused on local scenes, on scenes experienced in her many travels around Europe, and on florals. Later, she began to work in acrylics but recently has returned to her primary medium of watercolor. Sally's artwork has been exhibited throughout the West in major watercolor shows from California to Louisiana. Her work has been featured on the cover of a national art magazine, published in the calendar "Celebration of American Women Artists", included in the book "Best of Watercolors", and licensed onto notecards, umbrellas and tote bags. She has won many First Place, Second Place and Purchase Award show honors. One of her paintings was purchased to hang in the World Trade Center in New Orleans. Her most ardent fans have whole collections of her original paintings. Sally is best known as a local artist in the community of Santa Cruz, California, where she has lived since 1974. There she designed a number of different posters for the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, the Capitola Art & Wine Festival, the Capitola Begonia Festival, and the Wharf-to-Wharf Race. A number of years ago, Sally self-published a book of her paintings, "Sand Between Your Toes" which features over 200 watercolor vignettes highlighting the unique culture and environment of Santa Cruz. County. For fifteen years, Sally owned and operated her own art gallery located in the village of Capitola, where summer visitors could see and purchase her work in person.
