Produced for Kelly's collaboration with the August, 1982 No. 250 "Derrière Le Miroir: Hommage à Aimé et Marguerite Maeght" portfolio. Text on verso as issued.
Kelly produced the drawing for "Lotus" in Spencertown, New York, and sent the transfer-paper study to Paris for proofing. It was included in the final memorial issue of 'Derriere Le Miroir' with prints by Eduardo Chillida, Takis, Pierre Alechinsky, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Shusaku, Arakawa, and Saul Steinberg, to name only a few of the 24 artists who provided original graphic work for this issue. "Lotus" was based on the ink drawing "Lotus" (EK No. P74.65).
In October 1945, the French art dealer Aimé Maeght opens his art gallery at 13 Rue de Téhéran in Paris. His beginning coincides with the end of Second World War and the return of a number of exiled artists back to France. The magazine Derriere Le Miroir was created in October 1946 and published without interruption until 1982. Maeght's ambition in establishing his print shop and his publication magazine Derriere Le Miroir was to make available to a broader audience less expensive printed imagery by the artists of his time, many whom were represented by his Paris gallery. Its original articles and illustrations (mainly original color lithographs by the gallery artists) were famous at the time.

Libby and Bumblebee is an original etching, engraved onto a copper plate, from which Guy Allen creates an impression of ink onto paper. To create his pieces, Guy Allen marries the traditional technique of etching with timeless subject matter and print making processes, for a more contemporary twist.
Guy has adopted a unique approach to etching by using a stippling effect on the plate, a labour intensive pointillist technique which gives the images a detailed finish and highlights his skill in freeform drawing and etching.

Animals have always been at the heart of my work. I find the form, movement and behaviour of the creatures I draw a source of limitless fascination. I love the idea of them watching me, watching them as I draw. I hope my appreciation of the sentience and character of the animals I draw comes across in my work. Over my career I have drawn everything from primates to penguins, dogs, ostriches and even an echidna. These days dogs are my main focus, mostly because I adore dogs but also because they are such an integral part of life. I am delighted by the theory that humans and dogs co evolved, we wouldn’t be what we are without them and vice versa. I try to pare my images down to a balanced simplicity that directs attention to the subject of the picture. I try to balance the subject and the space it occupies, giving each equal importance. Light is hugely important to my work, I imagine my subject in three dimensions as I draw and the light describes the musculature and texture that gives the drawing it’s presence and grounds it in the picture. I aim to capture a pause, a moment where whatever I draw looks like it could wander off or leap up any minute. My influences include Japanese prints, Chinese and Japanese brush drawing and the European artists who were influenced by Japan. French botanical and zoological illustrator Jacques Barraband (1767-1809) was known as one of the finest ornithological artists of his time .He is best known for his watercolors and engravings that were commissioned by François LeVaillant, French explorer, naturalist, zoological collector , noted ornithologist and author. Levaillant’s Histoire naturelle des perroquets (1801-05) and his Histoire naturelle des oiseaux de paradis (Birds of Paradise, 1801-06), both of which Barraband contributed to, are still considered some of the most beautiful bird books of all times because of their exceptional scientific accuracy, rich color and detail.
