The Ventura was a twin-engine medium bomber and patrol bomber of World War II. It first entered combat in Europe as a bomber with the RAF in late 1942. Designated PV-1 by the United States Navy (US Navy), it entered combat in 1943 in the Pacific. This plane was the most famous Japanese bomber of the war and the one produced in the largest quantity. The aircraft saw service from the first day of the war to the last, and was well known by the Allied codename "Betty". The Betty was designed at the request of the Japanese Navy, which wanted a land-based bomber with high speed and a long range. Mass production of the bomber began in 1940, and the first planes came off the assembly line in April 1941, becoming known for their outstanding range.
The aircraft made its operational debut in the last phases of the war against China. When Japan and the United States went to war, the Betty had considerable operational experience behind it. Its experience and its long range were responsible for the plane's great success, particularly during the first year of war in the Pacific. The Mitsubishi bomber played a major role in the sinking of the British battleships Prince of Wales and Repulse on December 10, 1941. Originally designated the TB-7, this aircraft was renamed the Pe-8 after its primary designer, Vladimir Petlyakov, died in a plane crash in 1942. It was a Soviet heavy bomber designed before World War II, and the only four-engine bomber the USSR built during the war. Produced in limited numbers, it was used to bomb Berlin in August 1941. Its primary mission, however, was to attack German airfields, rail yards, and other rear-area facilities at night.
Supply problems complicated the aircraft's production and the Pe-8s also had engine problems. As Soviet morale boosters, they were also high-value targets for the Luftwaffe's fighter pilots. The loss rate of these aircraft, whether from mechanical failure, friendly fire...

A particularly unusual style of aeroplane identification poster, owing to the very arty images. Most such posters rely on very plain silhouettes; this series - and we have many in this series - takes a much more arty approach to the task with shading and an interesting angle view.
The Junkers Ju 52/3m (nicknamed Tante Ju ("Aunt Ju") and Iron Annie) was a transport aircraft that was designed and manufactured by German aviation company Junkers.
Development of the Ju 52 commenced during 1930, headed by German aeronautical engineer Ernst Zindel. Its maiden flight was on 13 October 1930. Following the rise of Nazi Germany, thousands of Ju 52s were procured as a staple military transport of the nation.
The Ju 52 was in production between 1931 and 1952. In a civilian role, it flew with over 12 airlines, including Swissair and Deutsche Luft Hansa, as both a passenger carrier and a freight hauler. In a military role, large numbers flew with the Luftwaffe, being deployed on virtually all fronts of the Second World War as a troop and cargo transport; it was also briefly used as a medium bomber. The Curtiss SOC (also known as the "Seagull") was a biplane scout-observation aircraft that operated from US battleships and cruisers throughout the Second World War, actually outliving two newer aircraft that had been designed to replace it.
Before the Soc, the US Navy had operated separate scout and observation aircraft, with the scouts operating from cruisers and the observation aircraft operating from battleships, with the main job of observing and correcting their gunfire. When work on the Soc began it was going to be an observation type, so the prototype was given the designation XO3C-1.
The prototype was ordered on 19 June 1933 and made its maiden flight in April 1934. It was a single bay biplane that could operate with a single main central float and stabiliser floats on the lower wing tips, or with wheels. The XO3C-1 was originally built as an amphibian, with twin wheels built into the central float, but this idea was abandoned before the type entered production.
