About the Item

The XI Olympic Winter Games, held in Sapporo, Japan in 1972, marked a significant moment in Olympic history as the first Winter Games hosted in Asia. To commemorate this historic event, the renowned Japanese graphic designer Takashi Kono created a striking poster that remains an enduring symbol of the Games. Kono's design is characterized by its bold simplicity and effective use of color, capturing the essence of both the Winter Games and Japanese culture. The poster features a prominent vertical arrangement, with three distinct elements stacked on top of each other: a red circle representing the rising sun of Japan's national flag, a stylized white snowflake symbolizing winter sports, and the iconic Olympic rings. The background of the poster transitions from deep blue at the top to a lighter blue towards the bottom, evoking the cold, crisp atmosphere of winter. Below the primary symbols, the text "Sapporo '72" and "XI Olympic Winter Games" is displayed in bold, sans-serif typography, reinforcing the clarity and modernity of the design. A significant element in Kono's composition is the depiction of Mount Fuji, Japan’s most iconic natural landmark, rendered in white against the blue background. This not only grounds the poster in its Japanese context but also emphasizes the connection between the natural beauty of Japan and the spirit of the Winter Olympics. Takashi Kono’s poster for the Sapporo 1972 Olympics is celebrated for its minimalistic beauty and its ability to communicate the essence of the Games through simple yet powerful imagery. The use of the red sun and Mount Fuji seamlessly integrates national pride with the international unity symbolized by the Olympic rings. This poster served not only as a promotional tool but also as a piece of art that conveyed Japan's excitement and readiness to host the world. It stands as a timeless representation of Japan's dedication to the Olympic movement and the cultural significance of the 1972 Winter Games. Today, Kono’s Sapporo 1972 poster is a cherished collectible, admired for its artistic merit and historical importance. It continues to inspire and captivate, reflecting the enduring legacy of the XI Olympic Winter Games and Takashi Kono’s contribution to the visual and cultural heritage of the Olympics. 1984 original poster by Warhol for the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia
By Andy Warhol
Located in PARIS, FR
The 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, marked a momentous occasion in Olympic history, and one of the most iconic pieces of memorabilia from this event is Andy Warhol’s striking official poster. Known for his revolutionary pop art style, Warhol was among several renowned artists commissioned to create promotional artwork for the XIV Olympic Winter Games. Warhol’s silkscreen-inspired poster captures the intensity and movement of a speed skater in full stride. Using bold neon outlines, a vibrant red body suit, and dynamic geometric background elements, the composition conveys a sense of urgency and athleticism. The contrasting colors—deep black, electric green, yellow, and blue—amplify the subject’s momentum, making the skater appear almost weightless against the abstract backdrop. While Warhol is best known for his depictions of celebrities and consumer goods, this Olympic commission demonstrated his versatility as an artist. His ability to distill movement and expression into a minimalist yet powerful composition makes this piece stand out among other Olympic posters. This official 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics poster is highly sought after by collectors and Olympic memorabilia enthusiasts alike. As one of Warhol’s few sports-related works, it embodies both his unmistakable artistic style and the spirit of global athletic competition. Warhol’s Sarajevo Olympics...

Bruckmann, Germany, with 2 additional screenprints of the Emblem by Victor Vasarely, 1972, signed from the edition of 200, on wove paper, each sheet, various measurements. (30 works) The 1972 Olympic Committee commissioned 28 international artists to each produce an original print for the Munich Games that year. The artists were given unprecedented freedom to explore their personal perspectives of the Olympic spirit using their own unique styles and methods. Departing from the traditional subject matter and style of past Olympic prints, the artists produced works which ranged from abstraction to realism, and from collage to op-art. The Committee specifically commissioned world-renowned artists to produce this series in order to destigmatise the idea that fine art should be reserved for private enjoyment. Instead, these posters demonstrated that art can exist comfortably in the public sphere, serving both as art and advertisement and echoing the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin...
